Oh man, have I been spoiled using the IC in the winter. My first batch in 80* weather and without the benefit of 45* groundwater...holy crap it takes a while to get those last few degrees!

Is it worth it to get a second chiller to sit in an ice bath to prechill the water going into the kettle chiller?

I'm blessed with really cold tap water. But, when I make lagers, I have to use a ice bath to get there. I chill my beer as far as I can with the tap water and IC. Then I use an old pond pump and some ice to get the temperature down the rest of the way. I recirculate the water with some old washer hoses. It does work well.
