Should pellet hops be added directly to boilpot? or in a bag? My last batch had alot of hops on the bottom seems kinda wasteful.

Mine go in the bag but there is always some that winds up in trub/break :).....wasteful? what were you planning on doing with them post boil ?

Pellet hops can be a little messy, but I just add them to the boil directly. You can put them in a nylon bag to keep them contained, but you may also get less hop utilization from them that way. After the wort has been chilled, just run everything through a sanitized strainer or colander and you'll get most of the hop material out. It will also help with aeration. The little amount of hops that get in the primary won't hurt.

Directly. I find placing them in a bag as a waste of time. The pellet dust will filter out of the bag anyway.

I place a nylon net over my primary to catch the hops then sparge them with water. Works every time.

Hrm that's pretty cool. Do you sanitize the nylons or how do you go about it?

I goofed. I siphoned from brewpot into primary.when auto siphon got down to hops mush on the bottom I stopped. musta thought I was going primary to secondary.I dumped remainder :( Very wasteful. I hadn't brewed in several months this wont happen again.

I never throw the hop junk into my fermentor. I use it for the boil, then out it goes! Actually, I strain into my primary, and so any "yucky stuff" gets strained out. You can dump it all in your primary if you wish- just more to rack off of later.

I strain and then put it into the toilet, no flush! - looks like something bad happened :D.

next person in gets a shock ;)
