Hi,

New to home brewing and this forum and I am doing only my second home brew and making an IPA and I would love some advice on the hops I plan to add.

I bought Mosiac and Citra because those are my two of my favourite hop varieties and planned to use them. Can I just use them both and not other hops?

I not sure I have seen the combination before and I read that they are both aroma hops.

I also have some centennial pelleted and whole that I grew, was thinking of adding them as well maybe, maybe dry hopping with the whole cones.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Cheers!

You got plenty of options man. And that's dank that you grew your own hops and plan on using them. What recipe are you using? You don't need to stick to just those hops but it depends on what your looking to achieve and of course what you like to drink. I do recommend using the hops you grew later in the boil as you are not sure of the amount the bitterness they contain. Good luck man I hope it turns out...DANK!!!

Thanks so much for responding!

I am using this recipe from Ghostfish - its a Gluten Free Grapefruit IPA
http://ghostfishbrewing.com/ghostfishblog/gfhomebrewing-grapefruit-ipa/

I like to drink super citrusy, grapefruity, juicy, piney bitter high IBU IPA's the most.

Citra and mosaic are awesome, and you don't need to add any other hops unless you want too.

Some people will use a fairly neutral bittering hop, like magnum, to save a few dollars and save the "good" flavor hops like citra and mosaic for flavor and aroma and dryhopping, but you don't have to do that.

I will say that using citra as a bittering hop seems to me to contribute more "cat pee" than "tropical" like you get in later additions but others absolutely love it.

My Fresh Squeezed IPA clone uses citra and mosaic and it's awesome. I do use columbus for bittering, but that's because it's cheaper and I have like three pounds of it!

Plus 1, couldn't agree more!! I have tried to use citra as a base hop and I had to talk myself into ignoring that flavor. If I do not have magnum I'll use centennial, galena, or nugget depending on what I am trying to achieve. As far as citra and mosaic, you will make a great beer

I would stick to Mosaic and Citra!

First off what kind of malts are you using? For an IPA I like adding a healthy bit of wheat..

Also if you're looking to add any hops I would say Galaxy would be a nice add (compliment Citra nicely) or any New Zealand varietal maybe even a bit of Cascade

+1 !!! Don't bitter with Citra. Try Chinook I've always loved that hop for bittering, my taste buds love it.

I am using this recipe http://ghostfishbrewing.com/ghostfishblog/gfhomebrewing-grapefruit-ipa/

Its an extract brew using Sorghum and Candi syrup.

I just rechecked what I have and I have some Magnum. Thinking of using that for bittering. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone for responding and giving your advice and thoughts! I really appreciate it!

As of right now I think am going to use Magnum, Citra and Mosaic. It's what I have on hand.

Also planning and dreaming of my next few IPA brews and the hops combinations I can use for them.

Thinking of doing.

- an all Mosaic brew
- a Magnum and Citra brew
- And a classic Centennial and Cascade (since I have some of this and some whole cone that I grew)

Thanks again.

Magnum is pretty awesome for bittering! I also like summit and warrior for bittering as all give a less intrusive presence to let the flavor and aroma additions shine. Just my .02 cents.

Mosaic and citra are an amazing pair from all I've read.

Sorry didn't see that you posted that earlier.. haha. But I think Magnum would be great for bittering. A lot of big beers are bittered with Magnum.

I'm terms of next beers do a SMaSH of each .. really get to know your hops.

Edit: focal banger from the alchemist is citra and mosaic.. nice combo

I was thinking of doing a SMaSH/single hop brew. Great idea. I think I will try that.
