I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I'm brewing a new Berliner using homofermentative lactobacillus followed by a large pitch of brettanomyces bruxellensis trois. My understanding is that since the lactobacillus is homofermentative it shouldn't create co2, yet my fermenter is bubbling like crazy. I'm planning on pitching the brett within the next couple of days so I'm going to let this one ride either way. Just looking for some input...
 
You are correct. What strain/source is it? If you have CO2 production you either have heterofermentative Lacto, or homofermentative Lacto and something else.

It's RVA 600 from RVA Yeast Labs. The website lists it as a mix of homofermentative strains. After a quick taste, I'm getting the same smells and taste I get with heterofermentative strains. It tastes good, so I'm not leaning toward an accidental infection.
 
What I meant was that I don't think I infected it. What are the chances that the mix wasn't pure from the seller?

I've heard a number of stories of yeast labs not selling pure cultures, but I have no experience with RVA. Why not shoot them an email and see what they say?

I did. I'm yet to receive a response.

I guess it really shouldn't matter, right? I've dropped the temperature and plan on pitching brett tomorrow morning. I was planning on running the whole thing through my sour equipment to begin with. Thanks for the response!
 
I've used Homofermentative Lacto several times:

- No airlock activity
- No significant change in Gravity
- Got pretty sour

I've also used Heterofermentative Lacto one time:

- Lots of airlock activity
- Huge change in Gravity
- Got pretty sour

After finishing with sacc, both seem to result in a similar beer. I can't say I noticed a difference, but didn't compare them side-by-side.
