I started a new batch of hard Cider.
Here are the ingredients

- 5 gallons of pasteurized apple juice
- approx 1 lb of gramma bees honey
- Lalvin EC 1118 yeast

I mixed the honey with apple juice and lightly boiled for 20 mins. I added it in the Carboy with the rest of the apple juice. I was very careful with sterilizing.

The fermentation has been aggressive. After approx 60 hours a high pitch loud whistle started. I thought it was the air lock. I carefully removed the airlock and the whistle kept occurring.

Does anyone know what this is exactly? I assume the bubbles and such at the surface were resonating somehow. Anyone experienced this. It went on for about a half hour after.

Most I've heard is a fizzing sound.

Never heard a whistling sound.

Maybe the high pitch is due to a high frequency caused by vigorous fermentation?

There was some serious fermentation happening. But it was a pretty loud whistle. I could hear in the living room with the TV on fairly loud. It sounded like a high frequency dentist drill so it caught my attention. I though it was the air lock at first but I took it off and the sound was coming from inside the carboy. It was some kind of gas bubble resonance or something. I haven't been able to find anything about it online. I'm hoping it means a good batch not a bad batch.

I took a video once I put the air lock safety back on. It's a bad video but you can hear the whistling sound pretty well. I will try to get it up on youtube.

Excellent, I'm interested in hearing it.

pinhole leak in your carboy?

soapy water might help locate it. gotta be above the liquid line, but check for a puddle underneath

only other thought is you are hearing the Screaming of the Yeast, Clarice

Nothing has leaked. I'm hesitant to think the sound was due to a pinhole in Carboy. The airlock was venting fine and when I took it off (having the top of Carboy fully open) the sound remained the same. I had it off for a minute to reduce risk of contamination. Then it continued for about 25 mins after that.
Must of been screaming yeast! Lol
Pretty neat though. I will post the video soon when I get more time.
