Hi,

I'm probably the typical newbie - my wife got me a 1 gallon starter brew kit. I found my way here from a cigar forum I frequent.

I hope to glean as much knowledge from you as possible before I attempt my first brew. I'll take a look around before asking questions. I was also referred to the "Palmer" book so I'm taking a look at that too.

I'm really excited to start brewing!!

Mucho Gusto,

James

I'm relatively new too, but welcome to the forums! You're in a great location for craft brewing.. I just got back from a trip down there but didn't have much time to visit many places. I did hit up Ballast Point, and White Labs. When you get a little deeper in the hobby, I'd definitely recommend visiting White Labs tasting room. A great way to form an opinion about different yeasts and they do all of the heavy lifting (brewing)... :drunk:

Thanks for the welcome. I am in a good location but that's what has kept me from brewing myself since I can get some really good beers very easily.

I'll make sure to check out White Labs. I think I've heard of them, and possibly seen them.

Welcome! I am relatively new as well. I have brewed 3 batches so far(all extract), and working on building my own recipe now, for a brew this month.

You definitely came to the right place for knoweldge and advice. The guys on here are awesome.

There are so many places for this hobby here in San Diego. Check out the California Homebrew forum for others in the area: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f189/

White Labs is an awesome place. Definitely a place you need to go when you want to learn more about yeast strains and how they affect the flavor of beer. Plus, when you are near white labs, you have at least 5 more breweries within a two mile radius :)

Also, find a good LHBS(Local Home Brew Store). All About Brewing is great, very knowledgable, and hold free classes every month.

Good luck and have fun. I started the same way you did--- I tell my wife she created a monster :)

Dan, Thank You for the great info. The more I read the more overwhelmed I feel, lol. I guess she feels this will be much cheaper but a colleague already recommended $300 in upgrades (ranco temp monitor and kettle with spout and temperate gauge). She really has no idea what's coming her way. :)

I hate you guys from SD. I'm in LA and always have SD envy. Luckily, it's only 2 hrs away. Love me the Pizza Port, Societe, Ballast, Alesmith, and 90+ other breweries that you guys have at your disposal, wtf! Anyways, just a warning, it's a neverending money spending, forever upgrading hobby.....but well worth it when you get to drink 5 gallons of anything you, yourself brewed.

Welcome to the hobby, and the group, from CO :mug:

I love the SD beer scene, have a sister in Temecula, some nice breweries there also.

hehe, L.A. is close enough for a quick trip at least down to Oceanside. I smoke cigars so I'm used to having a never ending spending habit. I might as well combine beer as my two favorite hobbies. :)

Thanks! It really doesn't matter what direction you go, you're bound to find a great brewery here. We really are spoiled!! If you, or anyone else here, ever want California beers, let me know. I'd be happy to ship some bombers or six packs. I heard Colorado has some good brews as well!!
