I'm brand new to the forum. Last week one of my friends and I decided that graduate school is too stressful to be done without beer, but we [grad students with tastes for decent brew] are too poor to shuck out $4 per drink at bars. Thus, we decided we'd go in together and brew our own. Because we're both Presbyterian, we decided to name our enterprise Totally Depraved Brewing, a la the first tenet of Reformed theology. We're attempting our first batch tomorrow: Synod of Dort Summer Ale. Happy brewing.

Oh, and does anybody have any recommendations for flavorings? I was thinking that it'd be nice to brew a wheat ale, or another light-colored beer, and flavor it with citrus zest and ginger.

welcome to the site! I think Jamil's Witbrew recipe is great. Its a Belgian Witbier with a great citrus flavor. You can find the recipe in his latest book or google it.

So we experienced a little setback last weekend during the fermentation process. No one told us, not even at the home brew store, that yeast goes bananas for the sugars in wheat malt. We had a wort geyser blow off the top of the carboy last Sunday morning. I'm sure glad we weren't fermenting in MY closet...

Wheat fermentations can definitely be exciting. Get yourself the makings of a blow-off tube for future batches.

I went to the University of MN, College of Veterinary Medicine. I practice exclusively companion animals. I agree with you; nice to meet another vet. That is 2 things we have in common :rockin:
