I have these hops...I don't know how I came into them...other than I probably got a great deal on them (1lb bags).

I did some searching, google, hops tables, etc...

Most of my charts and tables don't even list herkules or loral.

The one table I found that does list them...only lists "one way" substitutions...

What I mean is Chinook can substitute for herkules but herkules does not substitute for chinook??

Also nugget or tettnag can sub for loral...but Loral does not substitute for nugget or tettnag.

strange to me.

Kinda sounds like they skipped filling in the other side of the table, like a correlation matrix.

For hops it may be that they consider something more obscure may need a substitute but the common one, if unavailable might also mean the less common one would also be unavailable and so is not considered. With a correlation matrix, you know the missing values and why they are missing however. The hops info may not say anything as to why and I completely understand, you wonder if something is going on (and may be...).

Sorry never heard of those hops.

Or a = b, shouldn't b = a? Yes but why don't they say so? Wondering maybe they don't play as well with others? Maybe not really equality but more of an inequality like a cleaner bittering hop or a more easily worked with aroma subbing one way?

Trying to find "equivalents" is the wrong way to think about things, you need to understand what the breeder was trying to achieve. Both these are examples of breeders trying to improve the agronomics of hops.

Herkules is the newish German bittering hop, think of it as "super-Magnum" but with better agronomics and a bit more alpha (subject to drought years).

Loral is HBC trying to develop a European-style hop for US growers, again with better agronomics. So it's want you want for beer that tastes...beery.

My favorite comparison tool has both of them listed. Check it out.
Completely forgot I had that bookmarked! Plotting Tettnang, Nugget, and Loral show that Loral has pronounced grassy and floral characteristics vs the other two. One wouldn't get that as much subbing in Tettnang and Nugget for the Loral, but it looks like subbing in the Loral for the other two might introduce those aromas and if you weren't looking for grassy and floral that would be important.

What exactly did you search for? When I plug in Herkules hop or hopfe I get plenty of results. It's mostly designed for bittering, but it sounds like it also has typical 'German' flavours to it. Never tried it though, but I might once my current stash of bitter hops are gone.

I've had a few beers with Loral, most were a bit underwhelming. Floral (roses) and a bit of fruit if my memory serves me well.
