I just mashed in, and my digital probe thermometer is acting funny. It was reading the temperature just fine, but now it only reads "Hi." I'm not sure why its doing this, but if someone could help me figure out how to get it back to reading the temperature, it would be much appreciated.

I have a dial thermometer working now. But seeing as a digital one is much more precise, it would save a lot of headache if I could get it working again. I'm sure there's just a combination of buttons I need to press...

Is it one of those thermometers with an extended long probe? If so, Those are not supposed to get wet and once they go out they never are accurate again.

Thanks for the quick reply, by it didn't get wet. The metal probe (6 inches or so) is L shaped, and the shorter part has been hanging out of the pot the whole time.

I had one go out for no reason I could think of.. Expensive one too. I got a replacement from Wally World and 3 years later it still works.

The dial thermometer came with a turkey fryer, so I can only ballpark to within 5 degrees. It's hanging around 150, so we'll see how it goes.

Well, 150+5 will work. Maybe mash a little longer in case it is more on the -5 side or do a conversion test if you have some iodine. RDWHAHB

Only got to use the damn thing once.

After a couple of beers I'm on to the boil. A few more and I'll have forgotten about the whole thing. It was supposed to be a high gravity smash, so a mid gravity one ain't too bad.

If you were within the appropriate temps, you should have still hit your expected gravity. Did you take a gravity reading of the runnings?

No--I've got a mini biab set-up. It's only my third time brewing this way.

I actually overshot my og by a bit: 1.070 from 1.065. Could that have been the longer mash? Per your advice I did 90 min instead of 60.

The digital thermometer in my turkey fryer seems to think that water boils at 245 instead of 212... And I can not seem to find a way to convince it other wise. I ever wrote to the manufacturer, but I got no response.

No, I don't think so. A longer mash shouldn't affect the gravity assuming you were getting full conversion at 60 minutes. Going 90 minutes "assures" that you'll get full conversion. You can't get more than 100% conversion.

Sounds like you just had a slightly higher efficiency for this batch - might be because of the crush or the types of grains used. Glad it worked out! :mug:

:off: Everytime, I see just the word " Help". I get the beatles stuck in my head the rest the day. :tank: Just go get one of those $12 digital from wal-mart. They work great.
