I have a black ipa in the primary right now, on day 4 of fermentation. I was wanting to dry hop in my secondary with a combination of citra (1oz), columbus (1oz), and cascade (1oz). Is this way too much hops going on for dry hopping? I don't want this beer to have to sit for months before I can actually drink it. I've never dry hopped before, any info would be helpful.

Thanks for the feedback, a lot of the stuff I'd been reading online talked about 1 oz per 5 gallons was enough. I just hadn't seen a lot of recipes calling for that much dry hopped

I brewed Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale which calls for the following:

24g Cascade dry hop
24g Centennial dry hop
24g Simcoe dry hop
24g Chinook dry hop
18g Amarillo dry hop
15g Columbus dry hop

It's about 4.5oz total. I usually use a stainless tea ball, but I can't this time because it only holds about 2oz.

Hmmm, I know! Leave those in a week, bottle, then send me a bunch of those bottles and I'll give you some feedback on how these hops work!:ban: mmmm....

IMO, it is nearly impossible to over dry hop an IPA. I have two four gallon batches going right now of IPA

OG = 1.064 FG = 1.011

I am dry hopping one with columbus and one with cascade. I am adding 4 oz of dry hop to each batch in increments over two weeks so I get a wide varience of dry hop flavor.

I believe some beers, surly furious, use like 8 oz in a 5 gallon batch.

I actually wanted to do an experiment where I make a traditional IPA, but only bitter it up to about 20 IBU at 60 minutes. Then add an entire pound of hops in for dry hopping. I bet it would be awesome.

I read somewhere about sliding your keg's diptube into the same stainless steel braid used in mash tuns. Just get one of of those long stainless braids, cut the ends off, pull out the plastic from the inside, and slide the braid over the dip tube. That way you can dry hop right in your keg... maybe that would help?

It would, but I bottle. I just dryhop in the fermenter.

Ardmore isn't that far from me...I'm in Ambler, PA. You go to Keystone or another LHBS?

I work in Pottstown, so I usually stop at Weak Knee in the North End Shopping Center. If it's a last minute thing on the weekend, I'll go to Brew Your Own Beer in Havertown. I've never been to either of the Keystones or the shop in South Philly.

I love Weak Knee though! Great selection, nice people (even though the one guy I usually see there is the Wine expert), and can't be beat prices. I usually buy my equipment there too. It's been cheaper buying from them, than getting it shipped to my house!
