I really love my hops, but I'm not very acquainted with the different varieties, so I have been brewing single hop pale ales just to taste the differences. Although I haven't tasted any of them yet, so far I've done Cascade, Simcoe, and Crystal. Next on the list: Norther Brewer. Can anybody recommend a good hop schedule for the recipe below? I haven't been able to find too many single hop Northern Brewer recipes, so I'm looking for a little guidance.

3.50 lb Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 34.15 %
3.50 lb Pale Liquid Extract [Boil for 15 min] Extract 34.15 %
2.00 lb Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 19.51 %
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM) Grain 4.88 %
0.50 lb Special Roast (50.0 SRM) Grain 4.88 %
0.25 lb Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM)

Anchor Steam uses only Northern Brewer for bittering, flavor, and aroma hopping. A lager, not a pale ale, but brewed pretty close to room temperature, particularly at this time of year. Not quite what you're asking for, but I would suggest just using an clone recipe for Anchor Steam, and then just pitch your favorite ale yeast instead of the California lager yeast I used.

From Clone Brews by Tess and Mark Szamatulski

14 oz 80* crystal malt steeped at 150* for 20 minutes in 1/2 gallon, then sparged with 1/2 gallon.

Boil with
4 lb Alexander's pale malt syrup
2.75 pounds M&F light DME
1.25 oz Norther Brewer @ 8% AA, or 10 HBU

at 45 minutes add
0.5 oz Northern Brewer
5 ml Irish Moss

At 59 minutes add
0.5 oz Northern Brewer

Total boil time 60 minutes

Their recipe boils 2.5 gallons, and adds water post-boil to get to 5 gallons. It also calls for California lager yeast or Kolsch yeast.

Their recipe gives an IBU of 40, O.G. @ 1.052, F.G. @ 1.012.

Hope this helps.

Nebben types faster than I do. His post was not there when I started typing. Paulaner Munich is not improving my typing speed, either.
