Hey all,

I am looking into Home Brewing and thought why not start here. I don't have a kit yet but will be buying one this week. I think I will start by making a Festabrew kit to begin with to get used to the basic setup and bottling beware moving on to boiling and making my own Wort.

One question I have is Glass beer bottles V PET bottles. The PET bottles seem wrong to me but I cannot find a local option for buying empty glass beer bottles. Any suggestions? Will The PET seal properly?

Welcome, Halden!

I'm a keg guy and have never bottled, so I won't be much help. You did come to the right place though.... there is a huge knowledge base to tap into here. I suggest posting your question in the Kegging and Bottling section to get the most reads.

Good luck with your new hobby....before you know it, you'll be welding up a brewstand and looking through all grain recipes like a teenager looking at a Penthouse. :)

Welcome fellow Canuck! :mug:

Yes PET works great, that's all I use. As for glass bottles, I believe when you buy bottles from The Beer Store they come with free beer. ;)

Thanks, I just figured it would take a while to 60 -120 bottles from the Beer Store and cost $$$

Welcome :)
About half the bottles I use are "recycled".
For the most part, most of the beer I buy, when I have to, comes in either "pop" top (not twist off) or "flip" top (think Grolsch).
Just soak over night in the sink with some PBW, or other "cleanser", and most labels will fall off.
When I'm short on bottles, I will buy empties from whoever I am getting my ingredients from for the next batch.

Welcome fellow northern brewer.
You'll be blown away at how much you'll learn over the next 4-6 months.
Hard part is being patient.
I talk nice to my local bottle recycling depot and they set aside all flip tops and every Saturday afternoon I go down and buy 8 or 10 from them to add to the collection. I love getting 1 liter flip tops, last Saturday I picked up 4.
I also only buy beer from craft brewers and they often sell in flip tops.
Sorry about the Sens ;)

No Worries, I am a Habs fan.

Is that better?? HA HA!

Ok, I get bottles from the beer store (but not The Beer Store) and only pay for the deposit. I think lots of people could get bottles if they go to the recycling centers or restaurants/bars and ask for empties. It's the best way to recycle!

Oh, yeah... GO WINGS! :rockin:

Hi Halden,
Your nick-name suggests a Scandinavian origin...

I wonder if you already started the batch. I hope you're (or will be) using liquid yeast instead of the dry ones, included in the kit. Not that long ago, I almost lost faith in brewing from the kits. But there came the liquid yeast.

Based on your enthusiasm, I can almost guarantee you that soon you will be investing in kegging. And by the way, Princess Auto in my town (Newmarket) sells them for $25. Another couple hunderd bucks and you're in business.

What a great forum!

Cheers,
Richard
