Hey, I found this forum after doing some online searches about home brewing. I'm very interested in home brewing, but really don't know where, how, or when to start let alone if home brewing would work on a limited budget.

I hope to find the answers here, and something else that I cannot find so far, is whether or not home brewing of beer is even legal in Kentucky, but I live out in a rural area so no one would really care anyway if it wasn't.

Hi Harley and welcome. One way to start is to:

1. Get a beginner starter equipment kit, for around $100-150.

2. Get an extract ingredient kit.

3. Buy or reuse two cases of bottles.

Another idea is to contact a local homebrew store in your area and ask if they offer classes (many do, it's a good way for them to build business.).

And don't forget to have fun!

Hey there, and welcome from southeast missouri.

I don't know where yiou live in kentucky, but i think there is a small beer store/homebrew supplies in Paducah..

Ah yes, sorry for not naming a location, I'm in Eastern Kentucky near Morehead xD I think Paducah would be a bit far to drive.

I seen a couple websites that had a home brewery starter kit for between 50bucks to 129, and was like a couple 6gal buckets and a glass "carboy" jug thingy. I thought that was way to cheap and disregarded it as another internet scam website, but I think that was too harsh.

I'll do some online and ground searching for some local beer stores, though I haven't had the pleasure of drinking any home brew beer, but I'm sure its just as enjoyable as home brewed whiskey ;D

Thanks for the input, I would appreciate some more guidence if it isn't too much to ask.

This site will get you all the answers to your questions. I have found you can mail order cheaper than many local homebrew shops. You can get started with a stock pot and ferment bucket. I would get a book and read the basics and give it a try. Many of the big guns here started with a Mr. Beer kit. I wouldn't go that route, but an extract kit in your favorite style will get you going.

Harley, that is the kind of kit you want - you're on the right track. These are some reputable vendors: Austin Homebrew, Brewers Warehouse, Seven Bridges Coop, Northern Brewer. There are many others, check the vendor section here for more. Look around their sites for both starter equipment kits and extract ingredient kits. You'll be brewing in no time!

Welcome. Check out this home brew club directory for clubs in Kentucky. Usually they are an excellent resource. Also you'll find lots of videos on HBT and YouTube that cover home brewing.

Get yourself a starter kit and you'll be brewing in no time. I know this is putting it simply but if you can boil water and follow some simple directions you'll be just fine.

Hi Harley, a welcome here from Johnson County! There is a hombrew supply shop I know of in Ashland, called Ashland Beverage Center. Been a while since I was there but seems like they had a decent selection of supplies.

And yup it's legal, you can even enter your brew in the Kentucky State Fair Homebrew Competition :D

That will be a goal I will look forward to next year, or the year after that, I'm sure it'll take me a while to perfect a brew xD
