Hi guys,

I know very little about brewing but I'm eager to learn. I've just ordered about half the recommended equipment from this book -

The New Cider Maker's Handbook: A Comprehensive Guide for Craft Producers

- with a view to making some cider, and I'd like to make some beers eventually, especially some strong porter, and some cherry beer for my girlfriend. Tonight I couldn't wait to start so I rushed to the shop, bought bread yeast, apple juice with only Vitamin C as a preservative, glucose, bottled (hopefully sterile) water, and some balloons. I currently have no idea if my experiments will work, or even how to experiment intelligently, but I'll do my best to research well what I can concoct, and if I can get a bland and dreary alcoholic soup that doesn't want to poison me, I'll be happy. Anyways, that's about the bones of it. Happy brewing :)

I can't help but wonder if my mention of balloons and bread yeast helped alienate me :) Oh well, so it goes. My fermentation bucket arrived with some star san, an airlock, and a few other bits. My apple juice is bubbling away nicely, and the activity has got me really excited to try making a cider using the stuff I've learned from this forum, and better ingredients. I think this will be my first proper effort. Upstate Mike's Caramel Apple Hard Cider
