Hello HBT,

I'm stationed in Baghdad, Iraq. I've been reading up on brewing and look forward to making some beer next month when I get home. Great forum!

Cheers,
Jackson

Hey Jammin... get back safe. If you are on a tight time line, can I recommend you brew a 4 week brew (can't do it much faster than that). My first batch was an Autumn Amber from Midwest Supply (bought it with the equipment) and it was effortless. Make sure you have cleaner and sanitizer on hand!

I'd be interested in what you choose first...

As stated above, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!! I don't say it enough to our active duty and vets, but I lost a friend in the crash in Afghanistan a couple weeks ago.

Thank you again and stay safe!!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome, I am humlbed. It's my honor to serve our country!

@ ByramMike - Amber Ales have been my "go-to" beers in addition to good pales. If you have a good suggestion, I'm all ears.

@ JoshuaWhite5522 - I am with 2/116th. My first tour in 05' was with 3/116 aka "3rd Tank". We are a heavy armored calvary regiment. I was born in Prosser WA - so not too far from where you're from. I believe you guys have an Artillery unit in your area. I have some friends in it.

@ EuBrew - sorry to hear about your friend. That was a very tragic event. I worked with a lot of SEALs earlier this year and I have a lot of respect for them.

So I have read John Palmer's "How to Brew" several times over here in Baghdad, and after reading up on this great forum, I am thinking I might go AG right off the bat. I was considering picking up B3's deluxe kit(kegging) and using flyguy's build for a 10g rubbermaid mash tun. Any thoughts?

cheers,
~j

Remember to pay attention to fermenting temperatures. If it's going to be warm over there with no way to cool down the wort while fermenting, then you might want to make sure you use a yeast strain that is heat-tolerant.

Oh wait, nevermind, just reread your post and see that you will be brewing when you get home, not over there.

THANKS for your service! We have the best armed forces in the World and it's because of the people in it.

Is this going to be your very first batch? You certainly could go AG right away, but honestly an extract batch or two will still taste great. That way you could focus on sanitation, getting the boil schedule spot on, cooling the wort quickly to pitch temps, etc and not have to also worry about mash efficiency. Going to a keg setup right away sounds like a winner idea for sure.

Yeah, seriously. Thanks for all that you guys do. Your service to our country is invaluable. Get home safe, and welcome to HBT. :mug:

The 17 Fires BDE, i think thats who you are talking about. Or atleast thats the Artillary Brigade on Ft Lewis.

This is the kit I used... very easy, and only 4 weeks from brew pot to your favorite glass... I also got my equipment kit from Midwest... they ship FedEx so their shipping rates are a bit higher, but worth it.

I also recommend The Complete Joys of Home Brewing, by Charlie Papazian. You may already have it, but if not, get it... it has everything you ever wanted to know about brewing beer... a great book to start with.
