Hey everyone!

I have been on the market for a new hobby for some time now and brewing has always been in the back of my mind, I love to cook and create new flavors so this seems to be right up my alley. I have purchased several books and am currently making my way through "How to Brew - Everything you Need To Know to Brew Beer Right the First Time" by John J Palmer. I also have a few books that go in to detail on malts and hops.

My roomie brewed a few small batches last year so he has the most basic of basic equipment (Carboys, steel pot, etc) so I am hoping to team up with him for my first batch and use a kit with malt extract and "precanned" hops to get a feel for the process, hoping to get in to All Grain at some point but I have some trials and tribulations to go through before spending all of that dough

Sounds like you have a great resource in your roommate. Enjoy the process, pay attention, and don't worry too much. After all, hobbies are supposed to be mostly relaxing.

I am a brewing book junkie, especially since I got a Kindle. I have moved beyond brewing into fermenting wine, mead, and now sauerkraut and kimchi. Got a sourdough starter kit on the way. Once you're down the rabbit hole, there is no return.

What kits are you using?

I am a IPA fan so I am looking to try out the Ferocious IPA kit from midwest brewing...I plan to order some leaf hops on the side to use as dry hops later in the process, if I am not mistaken the kit comes with only pellets. Not sure how much of a difference the leaf hops will make in this stage but from what I have read so far they work well for adding a better aroma and flavor when added in the late stages of the fermentation process. I have been pricing out the kits VS just buying the ingredients and so far the kit seems to be the better choice price wise...with that said....buying the ingredients would leave me with plenty of leftover hops to add to my next brew...not sure which route to take yet :/

I taught myself computer networking by nerding out on text books so I figured why not take a break and try something a bit more...leisurely .... I fear, as you have stated...this is just the beginning...

Whole leaf hops do seem to give a bit more rounded flavor. But they also soak up a lot more beer & make a mess compared to pellets.

In my opinion, one of the awesome things about buying kits is you do not have to spend as much time rounding up and measuring out ingredients. Which can be fun, but particularly when you're pressed for time, it is nice to just grab everything that's already set.
