I very much doubt that Hefe yeast would sink first, it's known especially for it's low flocculation.
 
I washed mine with no problem using the normal wash technique. I didn't experience yeast dropping below the trub.
 
Here's a pic showing why I'm confused:

The top layer is obviously yeast, followed by obviously trub. But, the bottom layer looks EXACTLY like the yeast on top (perhaps not completely apparent in the photo.)

Anyway, I'm going to rinse it, even though Jamil Zainaseff (and Cris White?) say Hefe yeast does not store well.
