If you guys are interested, the 2nd HBT Competition will be happening soon and there is a possibility that there will be a special category for Gluten Free beers. So....post there and let them know you want the Gluten Free category annnndddd then enter!

Here is the post with the details:

BJCP HBT Homebrew Competition

I plan to enter a few, hope to hear that some of you guys will too!:rockin:

I posted over there. You might ask her if we can send in more than one of this particular sub category...because there is quite the wide variety...

I sent her a PM about just that. She is waiting to hear back from the Judges to see how they want to handle it. I'll post the answer once she lets me know.

Yea I just saw that and read his posts. I understand what he is saying but to some of us, it's about the feedback and to others it's about winning. Can only hope for the best right?

That's really too bad. I admit that I wouldn't have any confidence in anything I would make for a while longer and probably wouldn't have sent one in unless I understood what I was making, but it would have been nice to see feedback on gluten free beers.

That's really unfortunate. I would consider feedback from qualified judges to be the real prize.

Just my opinion but I would simplify the prize structure to alleviate a little bit of the cost and burden from the judges. For one just do ribbons for the BOS winners and just do gift certificates for the overall winners, unless some of that stuff was donated by a supplier. That way it's just dropping the gc or a ribbon in an envelope and be done with it. Tasting notes could be emailed to contestants which would save money further and I think a lot of us would consider those the most important aspect of the whole process.

It seems like it is a lot of time/effort on the judges part especially considering they aren't being compensated.

Hopefully things will get worked out so the forum can benefit from the competition and everyone can have a good time with it sans drama.

it was great last year! Nice feedback from the judges. and my gold ribbon is also proudly displayed on my kegerator :)

I have stopped making GF beers [it was for my Ex-- I don't have gluten issues]- but this subsection's members have been so nice... so I just wanted to "check in."

Cheers,
Wendy

Some people take this stuff very seriously. Most just do it for the feedback. The majority will get the competition back on in some form, Yoop is too nice to volunteer to do this every year and this year took on twice as much responsibility which got some people into a twist.

I still think it will happen, it just might be limited to 300 entrants like last year.

I actually would set up a little GF competition myself if Oregon hadn't had that law interpreted all crazy-like. Maybe after the new Congress meets on it. I know a few BJCP judges around here.

That WOULD be great. Lumping all GF brews into one category would make it really hard to judge as you be comparing everything from a light Pils style to a Barleywine clone attempt against each other. In which case I'd almost rather compete head to head in the conventional category. While I certainly wouldn't expect to win, at least that way I'd be see scoring based on how well I did at recreating it.

I think a good idea for a separate GF comp would actually be to use an agreed upon best commercial example of a style and then judge the submissions against that. The feedback could include not only what was good and bad about your brew but how close you came to the style "ideal". That way even if you didn't have enough submissions of a certain style(say Porter) it could still be judged against it's commercial rep.

Yeah, I don't know exactly how the GABF decides between GF beers, but it's gotta be hard. I've thought about getting my BJCP, but it's pretty expensive and time-consuming. Plus, for some reason I live in a state that has lax homebrew laws, but incredibly strict homebrew competition laws for the time being.

On the other side of the token though, just because we can't have a BJCP judge come in and give us feedback, we can help each other. I know this gets thrown around a lot on these forums, but my mailbox is always open to anyone who wants their beer to be evaluated fairly. I don't spare any comments, even when Jaimi says it tastes like a mix between aluminum foil and pinto beans. I am no BJCP judge, but I am good enough to pick out a good portion of a recipe just from taste. Casanova and I have done this and I am about to send off a package full of beer for him to review (Just one left to bottle Logan).

I am not all that sure BJCP judges are that good at tasting GF beers anyway...most of the ones I have seen just point out lack of body and appearance. I suppose this is true, but not really at the heart of what we are trying to learn.

I didn't see this post till now, I had realized you hadn't posted in awhile, but didn't know this was the reason.

Here's to hoping you can find another celiac BF* so that you can come back and hang out with us. :mug:

* Maybe try hanging out in gastroenterologists waiting rooms. :D

I may have to send some in, just for the sake of there being a sub-subcategory. Has some official petition to the bjcp been created so the onus isn't on these volunteers?

It looks like we are still going to be compared to 23, so don't expect to win anything.

That being said, it could be great feedback.

hey guys- sorry i missed your replies! i stopped following the thread.... my bad [apology accepted Brian- i understand your concern].

i am very glad that Yooper got it up n running again. i entered 5 gluten- full beers :)
