So I got an order of grains and other supplies from an online HBS that will remain nameless. Everything was fine, no damage, it arrived in a timely fashion.

But when the box arrived, I had to wonder what the hell my wife had ordered, and from where. The box was labeled: Diatomacious Earth Crawling Insect Killer :ban:

YUMMY!

I'm glad the HBS people are reusing boxes, I just thought they might have done something to hide the fact that the previous contents were insecticide.

No worries.:mug:

Diatomaceous Earth is "finely milled fossilized shells of minuscule organisms called diatoms". It kills crawllies by grinding their joints and dehydrating them. It is also used in water filters. If you don't have an exoskeleton, don't worry.

Watch out for the Pandeamize though!

diatomacious earth is completely inert - it is the skeletons of microscopic sea creatures - mainly used for filtering - but since it is so fine it kills crawling insects by cutting them up as they crawl through it

As a science project a couple of years ago, I helped my son make a PVC water filter to demonstrate various media - in a 2 inch diameter PVC pipe 2 feet long, we covered one end with cheesecloth, then stacked (bottom up) 1 inch activated carbon, 2 inches diatemacous earth, then 6 inches of clean sand. Poured 2 quarts of stinky murky pond water in one end and got perfectly clear out of the other in short order, non-potable of course. It worked just as well with straight DE, just clogged up a lot faster.......

Skol!
