I'm not new to brewing although it has been over 15 years since my last attempt. But when our IRS refund came in this year I thought I'd get back into it. So, after spending LOTS of money on new stuff (brewing kit, Corny Keg, kegerator, dual faucet tower, etc.) I'm waiting for my first batch to finish fermenting. It's a Black IPA called "Top Floor CDA" and it was the first time I have ever brewed with grains (steeping bag). It was also the first time I have ever had blow-off during primary fermentation! But the OG was 1.060 so if I read all this correctly it should be a good batch in a week or 2. One question for everyone: has anyone ever used an electric turkey fryer for a grain steeping pot? I ask because a few years ago my wife bought me one and we have never used it (there is just the 2 of us) and I thought since the thermostat is variable down to 150 degrees it would make a perfect grain steeping pot. Anyone agree? Disagree? Comments? Thanks for any help!!

Update: Kind of strange replying to yourself but what the heck. My first batch is in the secondary (and tastes great so far!!) and I've started my second (a Schwarzbier clone) and Im using the afformentioned electric fryer to steep my grains. I checked the temperature over about 30 minutes and it appears to be fairly steady and accurate. I'm going to use it for the boil as well so we'll see how it works. This is just an FYI in case anyone is thinking of trying an electric turkey fryer instead of the great big propane powered kettles. Or even cares about such things.

Sounds cool! I think there have been a number of people that have used those Electric Fryers for any number of facets of the process. Some of these handmade electric brewing systems you'll come across on here are amazing!!

Welcome to the boards :)
