I just joined up this evening and have spent my day studying and learning about the brewing process. I hope to learn a lot and start brewing my own soon!

Welcome to HBT. :) This is a great resource. I wish I had all this information when I started. Read everything you can, but don't get overwhelmed. :)

Keep it simple to start. :)

I'm an active member of several scuba diving forums so I know how effective they are for learning! They are full of inspiring, smart people who know more than I do!

I really enjoy a good beer, and 3 blocks from my work is a great shop for brew supplies so I think I need to make this happen. I also like to garden so I wouldn't be surprised if I've got hops growing soon too!

First challenge for me will be a hoppy IPA and maybe some sort of stout or porter. I'm looking forward to it!

Now for my first knuckle head question... Should I start saving all of my empty bottles to re use?

Welcome. If you are in Long Beach, stop by the local homebrew shop, Stein Fillers on Norse Way near Lakewood and Carson. They've got everything you'd need to get started.

I work about 3 blocks from them. How lucky am I?

I'll be saving my beer bottles in anticipation of my first batch!

if you don't want to drink out of a bucket. you will need about 48 12oz's per 5 gallons.

What's wrong with drinking out of a bucket? :)

I like to bottle with 22oz bottles. I hate to wash bottles. It was worth $12/ dozen to have clean easy to wash bottles.

I save 22oz bottles I drink.

Keep in mind if you save 12 oz bottles you don't want the twist top kind. Sierra Nevada bottles work well.

Scuba, yeah I need to be doing more of that.
