Wow, I guess it's easy to forget just how many new users there are here on a regular basis. I've been ordering from hopdirect.com for a while now, and it's good to see that this post showed so many people the benefits of ordering from them.

Not sure we are talking about the same thing... the folks in this thread are ordering Hops from a company at www.hopSdirect.com. hopdirect is a Holistic Practitioner Directory

:drunk::p:drunk: Sorry... couldn't resist

How beautiful is this?!? Just received them yesterday! I think I'll go back for seconds.

1# each Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo, and Columbus

Prob going back for some warrior/magnum and saaz...

I got my order today.
1 each of Amarillo, cascade, centennial, & willamette.
I need to pick up one of those jar sealer thingys, the one that doesn't need the food saver to work, kinda looks like a bike pump. Who has one, good results? I don't want to put the $ into the foodsaver.

Ordered mine over the weekend: Pump N Seal is what I assume you're referring to. I'll let you know when it gets here next week. Search this thread, someone mentioned a few posts back that it works well, and there are a few posts in other threads too if you search.

got 4 pounds coming in on friday. I need to buy a vacuum sealer to split them up.

what are your reviews on these? I'm looking to go for like 50 bucks max so no fancy stuff please

I ordered a pump-n-seal, but never got an email confirmation and haven't heard or received anything. Did you guys get any notice or did it just show up? Not worried, just don't wanna order again if its on its way.

where did you buy it from? I was up overnight and got a foodsaver on ebay for like 50 bucks.

if you are wondering about the hops, I got a delivery confirmation on mine. but that's because I paid through paypal so we had a bunch of email messages back and forth

keep in mind they are in harvest right now and are SUPER busy

I had the same feeling when I ordered mine. I think it took 8-10 days for it to show up on my doorstep. Whenever they ship it, they will email you.

So far, I love mine. The tabs are infinitely reusable and the pump device is easy to store and utilize. Won't compare the vacuum effectiveness to FS since I've never owned one, but I cannot imagine a more practical device for storing pellet hops in quart jars. The system simply works as advertised. One pound of hops fits perfectly.

Haven't used it yet to vacuum seal ziplock bags, but I think the FS has an advantage in this area. If I could own both, I would.

I've got 6# on the way:
Amarillo
Cascades
Cluster
Chinook
Nugget
Willamette

Four members of my LHBC went in together and purchased about $250 worth of hops together, saves on the shipping. I wanted another # of Cascades or a # of Colombus... but I just don't see myself using the above in a calander year.

Viva la hops!!!!

Schlante,
Phillip

Pol,

Have you used this before? If this works its a great deal, but i have one of the handheld ziploc ones and it gives me nothing but problems.

Also, can you use the attachments for things like mason jars and such?

Dont have it, but I am throwing it out there. I get these promotional deals from this store that are limited quantities or time... I got this one today. I dont have it, but someone may be interested in it.

I have the Reynolds version of this vacuum sealer ($7.67 at Amazon.) My plan is to buy one of the jar sealing lids to see if it will work, but I don't see why not.

It uses the same type of check valve in the bag, so may have similar problems as your ziploc. I had inconsistent results with my Reynolds, but have had good luck by double bagging my hops. (Actually triple bag.) I put the bag from Hops Direct into a vacuum bag and suck the air out. Then I fold it over and put it into a second vacuum bag and seal it again. Seems like a waste of bags, but when you consider that you can reuse them, it's not too bad.

The thing I like about the one in Pols link is that it has a charger stand. The Reynolds sealer was tough on batteries. It even wiped out rechargeables pretty fast. I took an old power supply and wired it up to mine. It has to be plugged in to work, but that not really a problem.

does anybody else have a slight cheesy smell on their whole leaf hops? Both my amarillo and centennial are like this. I've never dealt with whole leaf, is this slight cheesiness the way they usually smell?

I noticed today they have new crop leaf hops for just a couple dollars more than last years (for some varieties)

I just finished separating the 3lbs that my Dad ordered. He wound up being 3.75 oz over. I did some math, based on what it would've cost to get the same amount from our LHBS.

LHBS = $2.75 an ounce at 48oz = $132 + $9.24 tax = $141
LHBS = $2.75 an ounce at 51 3/4 oz= $142 + $9.94 tax = $151
HD = .695c an ounce at 51 3/4 oz + shipping = $36

So my Dad saved about $115 by buying from HD instead of the LHBS. Good savings...

I figured if my 13lbs was all exactly 16oz each, I spent $144.56 plus ~$16 shipping for ~$160

The LHBS would've been $572 + $40 tax = ~$612

With a savings of ~$450. Wow.

I bought 4 pounds and ended up with an extra 10 ounces overal. Don't ya just hate when they don't deliver exactly what they promised? ;)

So I'm formulating recipes using these hops, should I trust the Beersmith tool for alpha adjust? I don't want to end up with an under.over hopper brew...

anyone in cincinnati (Im in westchester) want to trade off some of these hops. I got 6 pounds 2008 crop that I wouldnt mind trading a few ounces for other varieties. Send me a PM if interested.
I have..
US saaz pellet
Willamette pellet
Cascade leaf and pellet
Magnum pellet
Pearle pellet.

Use the AA value that is on the Hops Direct page. You just double click on the hop in Beersmith and change the Alpha value.

if it's adjusted that's great, if not, that's still great because I spent about 20% of what I would have spent going to my LHBS.

either way does anyone know if it's adjusted or not?

YEa I don't care either way I just don't want to end up with a way out of whack beer if I can help it. Cascade loses up to 50% AA a year...

Are you saying the AA posted on hopsdirect is adjusted for being a year old?

Whatever the AA's are on the package that you get from Puterbaugh Farms is the AA's for that hop at the time of packaging. If you have concerns about the AA's then by all means email Puterbaugh Farms and see what they hafta say. As a matter of fact I believe I'll do that anyways.

BTW still Great Hop Pricing going on! Better than this time last year.

Message sent.

I'll post to see what the response is.

Yup on the price, ..;Last year i was spending $20 a lb, and that was cheap, i saw cascade going for $30-40 a lb..guess the shortage is over...lets hope.

You do realize that ANY hops you buy out there at a HBS are going to be at least a year old right? Do you think those vendors update thier AA's? Pshhha, right :drunk:

Thiers are all 2008 at best, and they are still charging you double or triple what HD is.
