Just reading the Strawberry blonde thread.

What beers have you tried/made that sound good but aren't?

I hate Christmas spiced Ales especially with Liquorice in.

My Rye Stout, it was my first ever AG brew. Sounded really good but the Rye didn't give it the flavor I hoped. I was thinking that since beer is liquid bread, that Rye would impart a simular flavor as Rye Bread, it did not. My Rye stout is still Ok, it is drinkable and a couple of my Friends really like it a lot. I guess Rye is just not my taiste. I can only drink it at room temperture, that is just something about it cold that I don't like.

Well, early on a mocha stout. Half of it was execution, half of it was basing it around a stout (roasted barley, etc.) instead of something smoother, like a porter or even a brown ale. But, it taught me that I usually don't like a lot of extras in my beer.

I made a quasi-altbier that I was disappointed in, but I think mostly because I didn't really know how to formulate the recipe (it was in my pre-Ray Daniels days).

Definitely with you on the Christmas spiced beers, Orfy. I thought Sam Adams Winter Warmer sounded great...until I tried it. Blech.

my Strawberry Blonde. Just does not have the flavor I was wanting. Oh well live and learn. Also German Wheats. I love all the other Wheats but German Wheats do nothing for me.

I have to take something back.

I grabbed one of the quasi-alts from the fridge. It's prolly eight or nine months old now. It was my second AG batch.

This thing is awesome; a LOT maltier than I remember, nice body, real nice reddish hues (I used a bunch of Munich). I think it just needed time for the excess hops to drop out. It's really nicely balanced now.

Brewed my own version of a pumpkin beer last fall, all those flavors sounded good. WAY to much cinnamon, even now it's barely drinkable.

This was the batch that taught me to form a plan, and stick to it! (This was also before I discovered recipe formulators, a great resource along with this site) ;)

Had my first lambic last night. I suspect that it will be my last. Very disappointed to find out that there is a beer out there that I don't like! Another three types to try though (I drank the Gueuze)

The Weissbier made up for it though :) Stunning.

I'm with you on the Christmas ale. I made one many years ago because it sounded so good, It had Cinnamon, orange peal, and a bunch of other spices that I can't remember. It was god awful. I will never drink another "Christmas" beer again.

So you're saying it's the fruitcake of the beer world, eh? :drunk:

I don't know if you are in the minority, Ryan. I've had some Christmas beers that I've liked well enough.

Nevertheless, I am thinking my Christmas beer will the a Beglian Wit. Winter wheat. Call it a White Christmas or something....

Any beer with "flavoring" in it. I like the idea of it- vanilla caramel cream ale for example sounded so good! I don't like orange, coriander, cinnamon, etc either in beer. I guess I just like the beer naked, without additional "things" in it. I also don't like sweet tasting beers- maybe they go hand-in-hand but I learned to avoid beers that have those things.

I think there are a lot on guys here that would pay good money to see that.;)

I like beer straight. High hopped, no problem. Malty, no problem. Rice, corn, or wheat, no problem. Any thing else and it just isn't beer. So tell all those Nancys at the brewery to quit with the foo-foo crap.

I think you have both hit on it. I've pretty much decided I like beer and beer alone. I might brew something with a lot of spices, vanilla, coffee, or whatever in it for someone else but I'm done with the foo foo beers. :mug:

We could never be so lucky. I will never give up hope but it is just too much to ask.;)

First off Coriander should never be placed in a beer, ever....

Second I'm strange enough that I would probably like flavored beers. I'm thinking of doing a few the next couple of batches.

Pumpkin Spice beer. Have not tried a HB or commercial version that I liked. Christmas Spiced/Spruce beers too. I guess you could count me in on the no-added-spices bandwagon. My Wit turned out good with the corriander, but it took time to round out.
