i have a homebrew kit for 23 litres of beer. how much sugar should i add

and what is the optimum temp for it

it is an ale :S

If you have a kit, why are you adding sugar?

Anyway, ales ferment best in the 64-72 F range.

Sounds like one of the pre-hopped extract kits (pretty sure those call for the addition of table sugar, never used one myself).

If the kit does not specify adding sugar or other adjuncts then don't. I saw an Australian beer kit that specified adding sugar and thought of keeping it as a reminder of why Aussie beer ain't that great (mate) but decided to toss it instead. (It was old anyway.) If your kit tells you to add sugar, you could substitute very light DME, it would only improve your brew over the sugar.
