Gah! Rusty burner!

Pulled a Homer recently...it rained a few weeks ago, and I completely forgot my Bayou Classic SP10 was still outside from when I did an IIPA about 2 months ago. Long story short, a day or 2 of rain, followed by 2 weeks of sunshine = bad times.

Most of the upper half is covered in rust, along with the majority of the burner inside. Is this thing toast or salvageable? I don't have anything to scrub the rust off with, only a BBQ brush that's too large to do any good.

Test it see if it works...My friend left his burner and it sat out in my backyard for a couple weeks it was already super rusted and almost all the paint has come off (I live by the Beach) Salt Is not a Homebrewers Friend...Left marks on the concrete as well. Still works like a charm. my guess is a little rain and sunshine will give it that vintage look. I think it would take a couple years to really take its toll. BKF should re-passivate it and clean it up...If you are super concerned.

Mine got rusty and started working really badly. Lots of soot, not much heat, etc. I bought some oven cleaner from the grocery store, put the burner in a trash bag and sprayed the hell out of it with the oven cleaner. Then I closed up the bag, put it in a bucket, and let it soak for a day. Gave it a light scrubbing with a wire brush and fired it up and it worked like new.

You'll have to disconnect a fitting somewhere so that you're not fighting a regulator, but hook up an air compressor to the burner. You'll blow any crap out that'd make the burner not perform correctly.

gun cleaning brushes work great with compressed air to blow the crap out after. the other thing is a small sand blaster if it is badly scaled rust. if you know someone with a sand blasting cabinet it should take less than 3 minutes to have it looking new. paint with aluminum paint to slow the rusting. good luck. been there done that!!!!!

Mine is rusty as hell because I leave it outside but it still works awesome! Once I have my brewstand I'm going to buy a large grill cover or tarp...or bring it inside, lol. Apartment brewing on a balcony sucks.
