Funny taste...

OK, I dived in & bought all the toys to make real beer, I was checking the gravity today and the beer has a strong taste of charcoal. It didn't taste like this a few days ago, can someone please enlighten me? This is an American wheat that was supposed to turn out gold or yellow, not quite there yet...
