Both are fine. Krausen doesn't always happen on every starter, and sometimes it flares up and dies down overnight and you miss it. Since I made a stirplate, I never get krausen at all.
 
Before I add anything I think they both look fine...

Could it have been that one had an airlock (blowoff tube) and on was just loosly covered? That tiny difference in pressure having a big effect??? I once had a bottle of beer crash cooling in the freezer at a party. When I took it out and opened it (releasing the pressure) it froze instantly... (So cool)
 
The 1 on the left ended up with no yeast. The other had a nuff for 2 5G batches been in the primary for 3 days an going well.

Both had just foil for covers at the start.
