Opened my mason jar from my last batch and found some funky looking purple "stuff" on the lid. It's smells perfectly fine like the last brew and the slurry itself seems fine.

Think I should use the yeast?
The obvious answer is no but it smells and looks fine

I've never seem purple mold if thats what it is

Did you wash off the lid, is there a scratch or so on it? Anything else unusual?

Any clue what could have caused that? Possibly from the rubber edge seal, which is red?
Microscope?

Maybe scoop some of the hop matter off the top of your saved culture to look underneath.
I like to save and reuse things too, but this doesn't look right. I'd probably chuck it.

If I remember right the lid had some funky black stuff on it before I dumped the yeast slurry in the jar. The mason jar had been sitting empty for awhile.

BEFORE I dumped in the yeast cake I scrubbed the crap out of the lid. I thought I got it all off but you never know. Seemed like rust with some mold. I knew it was time for more jars but used it anyway

There is a thumbnail of the jar in the the OP. If it wasnt for the lid I would never think there was an issue....slurry looks and smells fine and is about a month old
 
I'd toss it too. While I've not seen exactly this, I've discovered a patch of grey slime on the underside of lids, mostly with jars that I've kept around for far too long.

Ah, I just saw the 2nd image.
The content of the jar itself looks A-OK! I see no green or purple hop pulp in it, looks like it may have never touched. I wonder how that hop cake got on the lid...

Probably fine to use from the way that jar looks. Just pour off the beer on top and pitch? A month is not that old.

I've had some minor rust develop on the bottom of some mason jar lids, due to a scratch or pit. Most of those jars contained old (no: OLD) yeast and I composted the content. No loss there really. Easy to replace lids.

I've also tried using a double or quadruple layer of sanitized plastic wrap between the lid and jar, as a barrier. That worked well. The lids however, didn't fare as well. I think Starsan attacks the lid badly when enclosed like that.
 
The irony was to much not to post after he made that thread about never using Star San and never having a infection. We called it luck and he called it proof. Cheers

Just yesterday I had the same thing on the jar lid of a mixed fermentation dregs culture I pitched into an extra half gallon of wort. I chalked it up to being a layer of dead yeast, much like when you find a layer of dark grey yeast on the topmost layer of a pure (old) yeast cake. As to how the yeast got on the lid in both of our cases, I’m not sure.

I suspect some after-fermentation or outgassing pushes the more buoyant goo up which sticks to the lid. Then the yeast cake subsides, leaving the goo stuck to the ceiling.

I've seen similar behavior when removing jars containing Belgian yeast from the fridge. They started becoming very active like that within 5 minutes, bulging the lid and oozing from the seam, in a hurry to get out. The Blob.

My money's still on the lack of sanitizing and additionally from his last post prior to being removed the lack of cleaning at all. Cheers

It could very well be from not cleaning the jars good enough. Its the one thing I always seem to forget about.
But that wasnt the topic of the thread....Any help with identifying the purple stuff or are you just going to troll

Sorry to clarify my money is on it's an infection due to your cleaning and sanitation process. Cheers
