Well, I got a prompt response to my enquiry about my order, but 2-3 weeks to receive it? That's fine for the price and due to the fact that it was purely an impulse purchase, but I wouldn't order anything in a premeditated fashion if it takes 2-3 weeks! Maybe that's just a safety margin and it'll come sooner.
Dear Mr. BeeGee,

Thank you for contacting Jarden Direct.

We received your order number XXXXXX on February 7, 2006 and it has not yet
shipped. We ask that you allow 2-3 weeks from the order date to receive your
shipment.

If you do not receive your order within 2-3 weeks from your order date, please
contact us at our toll free number, 1-800-777-5452. Our hours are 8 am - 8 pm
Monday through Friday, and 9 am - 6 pm Saturday, Eastern Time.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Deibert

Friggen, grrr. AAAARRRHHHGG. SWMBO Birthday is Feb 20th. sonofa...
That 10-15 business days is the "party line" for USPS Ground. My guess is it'll be quicker than that, but I don't know that I'd risk screwing up a birthday on it.

I planned on it being one of those "extra stuffer" gifts with a hidden agenda ;). Comes late then it's all about the beer hobby.

give it a shot, I say. If it gets there in time, it's her gift. If it doesn't???

easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission...

Good idea on the DME...not sure why that didn't occur to me? Could also vacuum up my leftover grains. Maybe I can adapt it to work on growlers!

There is an attachment that fits into a wine bottle - it would surely fit into a growler. You do have to have the tube attachment which fits into a fitting in the Saver and the attachment. A lot of the clearance Savers didn't have these.
We have a Food Saver and no longer have to trim mold of cheese, lettuce stays crisp for weeks, package meat cuts, sandwich cuts, etc. I just inventoried my hops in the freezer and put them into a quart jar. Hadn't thought of sealing them in a vaccumn bag

Just got my FoodSaver. I ordered the VAC900 but they sent me the V840 model Healthy Eating Kit with a note "You've been Upgraded" because of the overwhelming orders of the 900 now being out of stock.

Still a great price but V840 is less than V900 and my neanderthal brain tells me bigger # is better. And who are they to tell me to start eating healthy :cross:. This happen to any others?

deserbrew, I got the same thing.

I will note that the Vac840 came with a metric-asston more bags thanthe Vac900 did. But I agree "higher number tells me it's better" crossed my mind too. I used mine today to test seal 1.5oz of hops. It did worlds better than the Seal-A-Meal I bought from wal-mart, so back that goes.

Same thing here...I guess they really only had one model and that's what you get no matter what you ordered.

Oh well, I'm not gonna let it ruin my buzz...I'm off to suck. :D

Oh yea, missed the SWMBO birthday but I got her something much better so no mud on the face. But when I brought it home yesterday speaking of "extra gift" she was rambling:

"I'm not going to use that, where am I going to put it, I use bla bla bla. Why don't you return it?"

Within 2 minutes I was caught and the true motive was exposed .

Man, still haven't received mine. If they hadn't been on sale I would have cancelled at least a week ago...hopefully I'll receive it in the next few days and see what model they hooked me up with.

I lagged on ordering mine, and the only one available was the Vac370. I went ahead and ordered it, so hopefully it does the job I need (packaging hops and maybe DME.)

DME would worry me, since you are vacuum sealing it.. I'd think that dme would get sucked into the vacuum chamber. Not good.

It would be nice though, I had DME in one of those flour containers (that has a gasket on the lid).. and it turned rock hard anyway! :(

was it made of clay-like/ceramic material? and did you wash it?

The containers I have like that will soak up a lot of water when you get that pourous material wet. My wife washed out our sugar container once, and the next time I filled it up with sugar (about 2 weeks later) the sugar turned into one crystalized mess within a few days as it leeched water from the container walls.

I've got my 20 lbs of DME in a GIGANTIC Ziploc bag, but I am going to pick up an airtight plastic pet food container at Pet Smart and move it into that this weekend. (b/c I think you are right that the vacuum sealer would suck the powder up when I sealed.)

Nope, didnt wash the ceramic container. Just wiped it out with a dry paper towel and added my DME. I've now got a nice brick of DME in there, when I want to use some for a starter I sort of chizel away at it until I have enough. Effing sucks. I should just put it in the sink and let it all come up and get more. What pisses me off is these containers are marketed as 'air tight', which is what you need to keep DME from solidifying. However, this is obviously anything but.

You can seal it without vaccum sealing which I'm sure would be fine. Could just manually push out some of the air.

dragging this thread out of retirement.

I STILL have not received my vacuum sealer. I was put on a back-order list for several weeks, and was finally billed on St Patrick's Day and got an email saiying the f*cking thing had shipped and would arrive in 7 to 10 busniess days. Maybe these turds only work on Friday's???

Anyway, it's been 31 business days (6 weeks) since I recieved that UPS tracking number, and the status has not changed once.

"UPS has recieved billing information from the shipper but has not yet been contacted to arrange pick up of the package."

I wrote them a fairly nasty email this afternoon.

Now that just sucks. I'd be working on getting that supreme upgrade or maybe 2 - 1 deal. I just used mine Saturday; really is a hops lifesaver so don't get your $ back.

found another use for mine: dog needs pills. dog good at finding the pill in other foods and spitting it out. dog also good at detecting pill 'powder' from crushed food and refusing to eat anything with powered in or on it.

However, dog not able to get aroumd powdered pill added to a little water and then 'vaccum sealed' into a little dry chicken breast. Kinda making a prednisone marinade. : )

Ring 'em on the phone. That's what I did and got my upgraded vac sealer a week later.

I'll give them a chance to call me today. If I don't hear back, I'll give them a call tomorrow and have them 'fix' this problem.

It's a shame yours hasn't come yet...I'm using the crap out of mine. All of my hops and grains are now vac'ed, and I've used it for all sorts of food items that are in the freezer now.

Anyone have any problema with their bags not holding a seal? Some of the hops I bagged have begun to leak. I was wondering if it could be caused by hop matter getting in the part of the bag that seals. I also notice that a lot of hops stuff gets on the FoodSaver rubber seal. Man that is hard to clean off!

I haven't had any seal issues...mine have all held. I do leave an ample amount of extra bag, though...I don't try to cut it too close. That seems to keep most of the hop matter down in the bag and not up around the seal or in the machine.

I think that is part of my poblem. Those bags are so expensive that I tried to cut costs. Maybe I better make them a little bigger.

Yeah, I leave ~3" at the top. I am fearing the day I need to buy more. However, one advantage to leaving a lot of excess at the top is resealing. I opened a bag of hops the other day by slicing the bag right at the seal. By the time I had pulled out enough hops for my batch I again had enough headroom to safely reseal the same bag.

I have a lot of bag rolls left but haven't priced them yet. I too fear what they charge. Someone mentioned Walfart having some other style that works as well. Will have to surf and see how much the original mfg sells them for?
