Was doing my 5th extract brew of a Dos X Amber clone. This time when I added the LME I got this flaky look that I have never seen before. Anyone had this? Anything to worry about? OG came at 1.045 which is lower than expected. I did two things different in this brew. I steeped the grains in 3gal of RO water instead of the full 6+gal I usually use. The other difference was the water itself. After the steep then I added hot side tap water to complete the 6+gal to boil. On other brews I have been using spring or distilled water. Opinions welcome. Tks.

Looks like a good hot break.
Don’t worry about it at all. That should settle to the bottom of the kettle and get left behind when you rack to the fermenter.

Why you’ve never seen it before?
Maybe your tap water has more calcium that helped it fall out?

Depending on the age of your plumbing and water heater, you might get some lead into your hot tap water. Bad for you.
Even if you’ve got new (~1990’s +) plumbing and heaters, the hot water will manage to pick up more minerals on its way to you. Just something to keep in mind if you’re minding your minerals.

Thanks. Not sure why I haven't seen it before but I would have remembered for sure. Probably would have been better to use water from the cold side. I'll try that next time. I got hot water thinking on speeding the boil process.

Agree. Looks like hot break to me as well. I’m surprised you haven’t seen it before. I typically use spring water and its pretty noticeable. As @Flunkedout stated, it just falls to the bottom of the kettle and you try to avoid it when you rack. Some people just pour it all into the fermenter. I’ve done both..couldn’t tell a difference.

i'm brewing today, so i'll snap a shot of my boiling wort to put your mind at ease...it's hot break....

i just dump it all in the fermenter myself....
