I have a 5lbs bag of flaked maize in a big ziplock that developed a small hole large enough to leak a handful of flakes in the cardboard box it was stored in. I don’t think it been this way long, maybe a week. This got me thinking how or is there a way to determine if flaked grains like rice & corn have gotten stale or unacceptable? Never thought about it before.

2 ways I can think of. Smell! If the grains smell fresh, they probably are.
Taste! if the grains taste fresh they probably are.

What causes staling? High humidity, high temperature combined. How likely is it that your grains got stale in a week? Not very. Check our how flaked oats (otherwise known as oatmeal) are stored in the grocery aisle.
