I want to make a yeast starter of Red Star Montrachet dry yeast. I plan to pitch the starter into three separate gallons of cider.

How many cups of juice should I add to the starter vessel? I'm planning on three cups cider, corn sugar and some yeast nutrients pitched with 1 packet Montrachet, that way I'll have ~1 cup yeast starter available per gallon of cider.

Does this sound right?

I think you'll be fine in any volume, but I would recommend trying to keep the same juice/sugar ratio that you plan on having in the primary.

Montrachet is only like $.50a packet, though, so if it doesn't work out you could just spring for a few more ;)

I'd consider just hydrating, and pouring the hydrated slurry into the jugs evenly.
