I'm making an IPA today and my recipe is:
OG: 1.077
1.50oz Chinook 60min
0.50oz Columbus 20min
1.50oz Columbus 15min
1.00oz Columbus 10min
0.50oz Columbus 5min
2.00 Centennial dry hop
I was thinking about using first wort hops, but everything I'm reading about it is giving me contradicting advice. Some say replace your 20min addition with FWH, others say forgo your 60min addition with FWH. Some say it gives your more IBUs but a less hard perceived bitterness, others say it just gives you more aroma like a 20 minute addition. Basically, which should I do: use my 60min addition as FWH, or use my 20min addition as FWH, or follow the recipe as normal? I'd like to get a BU:GU ratio of about .9 or 1. Any advice?

I've heard all the same contradicting stuff, and I recently brewed a couple small batches with first-wort hops, so perhaps I can let you know in a little while when I can taste the results.

Everything else is saying this:
Move only late hop additions to FWH
Do not use this to replace BITTERING hops
Use about 30% of your total hop bill
If possible, use noble or low AA (finishing) hops, as there is increased utilization with a FWH.
Do not use this to replace bittering hops if you are looking for a hoppy beer, as stated, the perception of those IBUs, is different.
My boil is already started and I threw in 1.5oz Columbus for my fwh, and still used 1.5oz Chinook for my bittering addition. I figure the 1.5oz of Columbus will essentially be my 20min addition just with added aroma, and I'm throwing in .5oz of it at 10, 5 and 1 min now. Beersmith is giving me an IBU of about 77 now, so I think I should be alright.
