For a first timer I'd suggest looking at the extract kits that are available from either a local home brew shop or many of the mail order places. That kit should include the extracts (powder DME and/or liquid LME) some hops, yeast and some good instructions. In addition to the brewing kit you'll need some basic brewing equipment, some of which you might already have in your kitchen. What you probably won't have is a fermentation bucket with lid and a fermentation lock. Again, try to hook up with a home brew shop as they would be able to guide you on brewing kits as well as the items you'd need for your first brew.

Make sure you get some sanitizer too. Besides being clean, everything that touches wort and beer needs to be sanitized.

Picking up a book on home brewing will help a lot too. The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charles Papazian is an excellent book that I think everyone has read and owns.

Figuring out what beer style you like will help the LHB shop. I'd suggest something simple for your first brew. Pay close attention to the brewing process, take notes and keep the kit instructions for reference. Search through this site too as everyone here started out just like you. KISS. stick with a simple pale ale from a kit (extract with specialty grains if you aren’t set up for all grain). Opt for dry yeast. Try a free brewing software and see if you can plug in the kits recipe. But follow the kits recipe in case the software says something differently.
Starting this way will give you a reference point and help understand the actual brew steps. A side benefit is in a few weeks you’ll have some pretty darn good beer.

For a recipe, scroll down the main forum to the recipe section. Select a type. In the upper right corner of each post is a bar with the style. When you find what interests you, click that bar. You'll get a sorted list of recipes.

A great question with hundreds of answers.
Like mentioned above, what are some of your favorite styles. Not that it can’t be done, but for a brand new beginner, I discourage trying IPAs or lagers in general especially light Pilsner-like beers. A nice generic pale ale, amber/red ale or a brown/ porter would be a great choice for a first try.
Of course you’ll also need some basic equipment as well as a couple cases of crown top (not twist off) bottles.
If you have a local homebrew supply shop they can help guide you with ingredients. If not, there are numerous online suppliers who all offer recipe kits for just about everything you can imagine.
For a first brew, I’d personally suggest an extract kit with steeping grains and dry yeast to get started. If you’re going to use tap water from a municipal water supply, be sure to use part of a campden tablet to neutralize the chlorine. Take your time and be patient and you’ll be enjoying your first homebrew beer in about 5-6 weeks.

Keep your first brews simple. Most any light or pale ale will be simple. The yeast that you use depends on the recipe or specific desires you might have for what you want your beer to be. But that will come after you've gotten some experience and better understanding.

If you like darker beers, a brown ale is a good first choice. Not a lot of hops and is not as sensitive to some mild mistakes and light off flavors as a light beer.
