Made a 2.5L starter pitched into an IPA yesterday after aerating with pure O2 for 90. sec, I also used 1tsp of yeast nutrient 10 min left in boil. Fermenting in bucket, temp is 66-70deg and 24hrs later zero airlock activity. Popped the lid and there is krausen forming but no CO2 bubbling. Is this normal for 001, never used it before but seems slow seeig I aerated and used yeast nutrient plus a nice starter. Thanks for any info.

well since you are fermenting in a bucket don't worry to much if you don't see any airlock activity. the bucket seal doesn't always hold well and you can be leaking out there. If you see krausen then your yeast is working. You could take a reading if you wanted but I would not worry about that. And if you really wanted to see airlock activity spray some star san around the under lip of the bucket and possibly around the base of the air lock and it prob will start bubbling.
Also depending on pitching temps and if your started was colder than your wort it may take a bit longer to see airlock activity.
I would not sweat it let it go and check it 2 weeks.

^^^ Bucket seals leak sometimes. It won't hurt your beer, at least in the short term (couple week). Krausen = Fermentation. If you are really hard up to see the process purchase a carboy or better bottle and watch the magic. I stare for hours.

Ok I have 2 6.5 gal carboys but there full right now. This may b it for me with the bucket. I just get a warm fuzzy feeling watching those yeast work quite an impressive process really.

Just checked on it again after being gone for a couple of hours. I keep going down there thinking something is finally going to be popping in that airlock and still nothing however I can smell the beer when I get close to the bucket so I'm guessing the CO2 is leaking out somewhere plus when I press on the lid no bubbles pop through the airlock so the co2 is leaking out somewhere. Also the temp is rising so I know active fermentation is def taking place. Guess we'll gravity check in 10 days and see where its at, just weird never had this happen with this bucket before.

Update: It finally kicked off yesterday afternoon with some slow bubbling, checked around midnight and theres krausen in the airlock. It took awhile but its going like crazy now, prob have to affix a blowoff tube since I've cleaned the airlock about times now.

I think I know what happened. I took the starter out to warm but since the brew day was taking longer than normal I put the starter back in the fridge. I removed it about an hour and a half before pitching but this obviously wasn't enough time to rouse the yeast so I think they were still a little sleepy when I pitched the hence the long lag time before kicking off

I have had slow starts with US-05, which is the same/similar strain.

In my experience 001 and us-05 have started slow at times, San Diego super as well. And sometimes slow is good. The magic starts with the subsequent generations.

That's good to know I def plan on washing this yeast for future batches.
