How’s this look. Set the gap at .028 with feeler gauges. Think it looks much better than my LHBS which he told me their gap is set at .033. Almost think I could go a little smaller on the gap but we’ll see what kind of bump in efficiency I get with this crush. I threw in 1/2lb of rice hulls just in case.

Looks pretty good. You didn't have to mill your oats. Those can go in separate when you mash in. Unless you had already mixed them in when you took that picture.

yeah I don’t mill em I just happened to throw them into the grains before the pic. Think I can go finer. Judging by the amount of whole hulls I’ll prob drop it next bat home, but I like the amount of crush I’m seeing in the kernels.

Well og came in five points higher with the volume I’m used to getting. I think I boiled off a touch more so instead of 5.75 into fermenter it’s like 5.5-5.65 but if I had my LHBS crush I’d still be under as I have been. Might tighten her up a bit for the next one. But even 5.5 gal gets me a full keg so I’m happy with that.

You brew in a bag? I would say that .028 is probably fine enough. Lower than that and you might start having run off issues. You might be able to get down to .025 and still be okay. I have mine set to the width of a credit card. Used to use feeler gauges, then kinda went a simpler route. Plus, my feeler gauges are all rusty now.

I batch sparge. I used 1/2lb rice hulls, if I tighten it a smidge for the next one I’ll prob add a full lb of hulls. Runoff came off great this time with no issues.

i set my mill to .028" also with feelers....i might run my mill a little faster, mine looks finer then that, and i don't need rice hulls....even with adjuncts.....only a 2 roller JSP....

i use a bazooka in a round cooler.....and being i run it fast it might be why i get more flour......

edit: how many pounds and how long did it take to run through? out of curiosity?

so it’s an 11lb hopper I prob added at least 12 of the 15lb grain bill milled some of that then added the rest of the grains and ran it through. I didn’t know how fast I should go but it took like I’d say 5 min to do all of that. It was really fast.

for reference it takes me about 15-20 minutes to do 20lb's, for a 10 gallon batch....i would have thought i was running it faster than you though...might be time for me to upgrade my mill! just for looks though, because i get around 90% effec with this one the way it is...

i've been meaning to post a pic of my crush, and ask what people thought of it....:mug:

edit: damn...i do need a new mill, i looked at the description for that mill, and it says 8lb's a minute......i've always heard about 300 or so RPM though! (i believe?)

I run my mill at .021" with no problems, But I also condition the malt before milling. That helps to keep the husks in tact so I have no problems with the runoff.

pictures, or it didn't happen...LOL (i don't think my mill would even catch at that tight)

I will get some pics when I do my next batch. Not sure what the fixed gap is, but this is as tight as I can get the third roller.

damn, this thread is making me want a 3 roller mill bad.....if i get 90% with my 2 roller and .028"...and i could go down to .021" with a three roller! well anyway i could (lol, insert missing word) a buck or two a week, that's like 50-100 a year!!! the mill would pay for itself the first year! :mug: lol

Check out my article if you're thinking of getting a mill. I also cover optimal gap setting, speed, how to condition, etc.

Cheers!

that blue color scares me, my liver was so f'd it hurt so bad to even get out of bed for a month because of moldy malt.......i'm ready for bed, but will look over the article further when i'm drinking coffee.....(just still, that blue is bad....and you're the first one to say mycotoxins are the devil! :D)
