I think the lessons learned from my first brew were to understand the process and to do a dry run. If you understand why you do things a certain way, or at certain volumes, temps, times, materials, and so on, it helps you avoid mistakes and fix things if you do make a mistake. A dry run of boiling water, using auto-siphon, filling air-loc, and etc helped me avoid those mistakes, and get my technique right before dropping anything besides water in the pot.
That's great advice, I preach the same to all prospective brewers. Don't eff up a batch of beer figuring out your volumes. Do all your transfers first with water and take good notes and good measurements.
