Might make a really nice wee beer- or you could add some DME and boil (again) for a few min.- but that of course opens up the chance for more problems.

Brewed Bee Haus Pale Ale and missed OG. Sitting at 1032, any suggestions?

Always measure your preboil gravity. Also you need to know your boil-off rate so you can then determine if you will hit your postboil OG or not. You can then adjust during the boil by adding some DME if you anticipate being to low. If your OG will be higher then expected you can 1) dilute it with the appropriate amount of water, 2) boil less 3) Go with it but increase your bittering hops accordingly.

This beer will be OK, it just will not be as strong. As long as you are sanitary and ferment at 65 to 67F it will be a nice beer.

Next time make sure the grain crush is good (grains well open and some flour). Strike water first for strike water and when it is at the strike temp (Stable temperature) add grains, mix well and cover for 1 hour. When you sparge using 180 to 185F to start will help to bring the mash up to 170F, mix well, recirculate until clear and collect runnings and then lower sparge water temperature to 170F and repeat the same steps as for sparge #1 for sparge #2.

Being sanitary is key to making good beer. Use PBW for cleaning with hot water and Starsan for sanitizing. Bottles and caps get the same cleaning steps as well as kegs if you use them. Your hands must be sanitary at all times, this is how most bacteria get into beer.

Thanks for the replies guys. A little disappointed, but it was a good learning experience. Now going back over the activity list and see where the problem occurred.

One question. The initial 2 quarts out of the MLT that you drain, do you recirculate back into the MLT when batch sparging? Could failing to do this effect the gravity that much?

Yes and yes. There are alot of gravity points in that 2 quarts. Just pour it gently back on top of the grain bed.

Never discard wort... no matter how full of junk it is... just send it back to the MLT. Congrats on the AG, and thanks for sharing this with us.
