We've got a black and white urchin who prowls the neighborhood looking for handouts. When I first saw it I was walking with groceries, and she just about jumped into my bag. Since I'm the world's biggest mush I went and got it a little chicken salad and a disposable martini glass full of water. Turns out she has a home, but prefers to eat dozens of meals a day from people like me. Outsmarted by a cat.

I agree that trying to tell cat people not to feed strays is pointless, you might as well tell them you approve of starving orphans to death. Actually, mikey, could you get ABguy's pittie to pee on your lawn? He might be a mush of a pit, but he's still a pit, and his pee is free...

Moth balls will deter a cat, problem is that unless you can apply them out of the rail, you'll be using up a lot of them. I have a similar problem with neighborhood cats "using" my plant beds as their restrooms and peeing on and scratching cars. I have decided that as soon as I figure out who the owner is, I will make a doorstep delivery of my next involuntary plant bed cleanup.

There are tons of roaming cats in our neighborhood. They used to hang out in our yard and pee on stuff. Orange Bastard, Fluffy Orange Bastard, Black Tabby Bastard, Silver Stripey Bastard.

Then we found ourselves suddenly in possession of a new young, super-aggressive, super-territorial cat. He's an indoor cat but is allowed supervised outdoor time in the backyard (no roaming). After a couple weeks, we noticed that the roaming cats would no longer venture into our backyard when he was there. Then we noticed they never ventured back there ever.

I'm not saying you should get a cat, but maybe the next time your dog-owning friends (you have dog-owning friends, yes?) go on vacation, you could offer to dog-sit. Give it full reign in the backyard and watch the shocked expressions on the cats' faces as they scramble back over the fence. It only takes a few times, a few days, for the little idiots to learn not to go back there any more.

Feral cats are free game. I would put out a live trap and take them to the pound. They will euthanize them. But they are feral cats.

As for someone's pets. Please don't kill them.Think about how you would feel if someone killed your dog/ cat/ whatever.

Honestly, if you want to break the habit, you have to outsmart the cat. Make the yard unattractive in some way, whether it's through chemicals (urine or lavender), a dog or aggressive cat, or the autosprinkler thing. But catching it likely won;t make a difference nor will throwing stuff at it.

I think you need coyote urine for cat deterrent. Check on Garden web for cat problems. People there have lots of good ideas for that kind of stuff.

Instead of coyote urine, I think it would be much more effective to get a coyote. ;)

Is it a fed-ex or UPS policy to NOT ship a mointain lion? If not, can you mail me one? I guess you could give it a yeast infection and label the box "live yeast samples"
