Do you mean boring and bad? I might be conflating them a bit, but the local breweries are definitely mostly bad, not boring. Linden Street is mostly boring, as is Drake's, but I'll take them over the bad ones any day, obviously. (I also have no idea what the deal with Linden Street is, since the Dock seems to have taken over their entire brewery.)

Anyway, it depends on what establishment you're talking about. It's actively detrimental if one of the three taps at a local place is Line 51 because their beer is awful. Even places that have 10 or more taps can frequently be filled with absolute garbage out here, only salvaged by something like Death and Taxes, which obviously anyone in the bay can serve. Places clearly want to serve Oakland beer, but this means Line 51 and Ale Industries (and to a lesser extent Drake's), so it's not like there are options around. That's what I mean by slim pickings, I've found myself in situations where I would expect to be able to find something interesting on tap, only to be disappointed, alarmingly frequently for how good the beer scene is supposed to be over here.
The fact so few bars with 8 or fewer taps don't have one of them be 1500 at all times is bewildering.

Yes, I meant boring and bad. I'd be curious why places aren't just rocking Faction or Drakes if they want something local? Price? Marketing?

I HAVE NO IDEA. A coworker of mine apparently knows the Line 51 guy and described him as "a salesman, not a brewer" which makes a lot of sense. Why their taps are so common around Oakland is baffling. I could ask MrFootstones about pricing, I doubt there's much difference.

King Citra Double IPA on tap today. Nice!

Confirmed. Is good. Sando also.

I was thinking in terms of going to a random bar or restaurant and seeing the tap list. You might see Fieldwork or Temescal, but you're probably going to see Drake's IPA and Line 51 (and while I like Drake's more than most, their standard lineup is boring). Rare Barrel is stupid expensive for what they are, and I'm frankly kind of shocked that you'd say they're making "really good beer" (though I suppose it's possible that they finally stopped making Bruery-level dreck once I quit the club). SN's taproom doesn't lead to them distributing any more, if you want to find interesting SN stuff you either have to go there or go to an event at Beer Rev or something. Plus we virtually never get anything from SF, I think at least Cellarmaker goes to the peninsula.

So, sure, we have a few more options around here, but it doesn't really trickle down.

Liked for appropriate use of "dreck".

Distributors in the Bay Area are fuckheads.

whaaaaaaaat? that's unpossible.

King Citra was good. Was nice that it leaned more toward the fruit forward and softer bitterness style of hoppy beer than I find in the typical Fieldwork IPA. Maybe preferred Sushi Beer since it wasn't almost 9% ABV, but I'm kind of a wuss these days.

I believe this has been touched on in the past, but do the crowlers hold for 2-4 weeks?

It really depends on how well they fill and seal it at the machine. Each time could be different.

Lots of varying opinion online. From a Week to a Month properly sealed.

I usually only hold them for a few days at the most like a growler.

Bummer, I was hoping they'd go the distance. Unless anyone else has had differing experiences...

My longest was two weeks and it was fine. Outside of some kind of leakage, I wouldn't see how that couldn't translate into a few months.
Depends on how well it's purged and how much oxygen gets in there. It could be fine, or it could be disastrous. The longer you go, the higher the odds of "disastrous".

Got to try Hazy Train IPA again. Still solid. This batch maybe seemed more dry then the time I had it back in August?

Can Release info for 12/24 Saturday:

All Fieldwork Taprooms will open on Xmas Eve at 10 am for the release of 16 oz cans of Galaxy Juice, Orchard Street and Broken Clouds.
We are more than doubling the canning run tomorrow, so more beer will be available in all three Taprooms. On Friday evening, we will publish the number of cases of each beer delivered to each Taproom.

We heard complaints of line cutting for last month's can release. So, numbered wristbands will be available at 8 am, and you must remain in line after getting a wristband. We will set per person limits on Saturday morning pending turnout. A wristband doesn't guarantee you an allotment of cans.
