Sorry to keep harping on this. I really liked the work they did.

That's pretty ******.

I read both of the sites a lot and got a good amount of my local info from them, but neither of them were beacons of journalism. Not to defend Ricketts or his actions, but ******* did I want to slam my head against a wall reading like 90% of their stories. And I ******* suck at writing/grammar/English!

Sure, it was more of a starting point for aspiring journalists. Good luck getting that kind of hyper local coverage in the Sun Times.

If anything DNAInfo and Chicagoist/Gothamist forced the big outlets to start covering some of these important yet very local news events because THEY were, etc..

I'd imagine without the pressure from such outlets, we'll see that go out the window pretty quickly.

Also, nice dog whistle there Frank. ;)

What kind of funding is needed for an institution like DNAInfo? They had a NY and a Chicago site, but for purposes of this discussion and reading base, let's say just Chicago. They weren't an ad-heavy site.

I don't know, but it's more than Joe Ricketts was willing to "donate" clearly. From what I've read in the last day, none of these hyper-local news outlets are profitable. Doesn't surprise me given the size of the market(s). Can't believe that the decision by some editors to unionize would improve profitability.

The manner in which all this has gone down does seem pretty ****** tho.

Look at the bright side, this was one of the last stories.

Twice.

I heard they gave like four months benefits to employees and severance. Guess a lump sum payout to employees was cheaper than continuing to lose money.

Second hand information, so take it with a grain of salt

This is true.
Employees will receive three months of paid “administrative leave” at their full salaries, plus four weeks of severance, according to the company.

Corridor was decent...enjoyed the wheat pale more than the other hazy offerings. Red curry mussels were key tho.

Layering at Dovetail now...not bad. Helles has a little diacetyl, but the Vienna is bangin. Their special release today was a rauchbier...it was interesting how many people came in and tried to order it before the bartender warned them to try a sample first.
