What's wrong with people?
Not making any excuses, but when I was a newbie, I remember not fully knowing what was what. With soooooo many new beers and breweries along with the established one, it's super hard to know what really is desired and what isn't. Yes, screw the people that are only buying it cuz they think they can flip it, 100% agree with that. But for the person that really wants to try all the different awesome beers out there, seeing "Limit 1" automatically elicits a feeling of, "Oh man this will sell out quick! It does sound like it could be good, oh ok the ratings are good, I guess if I want to try it, I gots to buy it now! Cuz you know, there have been plenty of beers already I wanted to try and saw them on the shelf, but then a day later when I came back it was all gone!!!"

Again, this is all self inflicted wounds here. And the more these actions are happening the more others start falling into it. But the stores tweeting it out is only making it worse. Have you seen the rootbeer phenomenon?!

There was a post on CCBE asking about putting ice cubes in a beer. IF A PERSON CAN'T WAIT FOR A BEER TO BE COLD HOW CAN THEY WAIT ANOTHER DAY OR A YEAR TO GET THE BEER IF IT SELLS OUT RIGHT NOW?!!??

I'm pretty sure that ice cubes in beer guy was Michael portnoy, the guy that soy bombed bob Dylan. I think from now on im gonna look at the CCBE as a collection of performance artists all trying to outdo each other.

which of you was talking about this with? i was joking it'd be the only time finches ever flew...of the shelves... was it Lansman ?

Yeah, that was me. And yes, put 'Limit 1' on something, and it will sell, no matter how bad it is. No surprises here that some stores adopt this practice to move product.

please title one of your beers "performance art"

I just look at it first thing in the morning to get myself laughing to start off the day.

Everyone is clueless when they start, that's the nature of the hobby. The desire to learn is what separates us from the animals (#newmoney).

To be fair, #newmoney doesn't know any better. They don't remember Bourbon County sitting on shelves for months ($11 a bomber!?!?!) or how no one really cared much about Zombie Dust when it was draft only. They certainly don't remember when beer sections were a quarter the size of what they are today, with a significant portion of that being taken but by weird Belgian beers that were too expensive to blindly try. Oh, when I could have had all of those Cantillon...

So remember that this is a collector's hobby for a lot of them because that's how they were introduced to it. The pokemon joke has existed for years but there are people interested in beer now that were taught that that isn't actually a joke; It's the point.

Also, I place a lot of blame on untappd. Ticking and swinging beer peens became far more annoying with that ****.

Those were the days. I just like ******* with #newmoney and saying "Oh ****, Three Floyds has Cenotaph at the pub". Most of them look at me like I have three heads.

If all forms of Social Media vanished overnight I think 95% of it would go away. You'd still have websites like this for people to flex their beer muscles, but it wouldn't be that instant gratification some of those people desire. Plus, you'd actually have to go in, talk to your local liquor store owners/workers or go into the local bar or brewery to know when stuff is getting tapped or being released (shocker, I know) instead of being a lurker in CCBE and poaching all the **** that people post while adding nothing to the pool of information.

**** i was new money not twoish years ago... but god damnit i wanted to know the brewers, how the beer was made, why the good stuff tasted so good, why Dunt and Lansman were so kewl why Duffman929 was so excited about all this sour ****. so i grew a beard put on my best plaid shirt and went out in the world... I pretended to be an architect for a bit, worked at a brewery for a bit and now i'm back in chicago where it all started, mostly because I "respect beer"

srs done being a dick for a bit

If new money actually drank beer, a lot of these problems would go away. But they don't. They buy and flip. I can't count how many times I've headed out to a tapping and thought, ah **** here we go.. And it's ******* dead.

Saisons, wilds and lambics.

So much this. Starting around 3.5-4 years ago I used to always check bar's websites or Beermenus for upcoming events or tappings and then would see if my friends wanted to meet me up there. I kept the news to a select few and if they wanted to tell friends, then we'd have a whole happy ass group.

The walking into a bar, seeing something awesome on tap and posting it to CCBE is just feeding the lurkers and #newmoney constantly.

Here are the release dates for this month:

1/21 Coffee Eugene, a Robust Porter, aged with Dark Matter Coffee
After seeing the post here about the tapping earlier today, I got excited and hopeful. Then I saw this in the Rev email newsletter without any mention of it being canned.
Maybe next year.... :(

To be fair, they only list Unsessionable as a specialty six-pack. My understanding was that they were going to slot in another 3 throughout the year to come out in the mid-point between the main seasonals. Maybe they haven't decided on what the other three should be?

Re VMC tinypyramids , this batch will have aged for about a year in barrels (if I remember correctly). That's a first and it may improve it (maybe?).

I'll continue stay hopeful and will definitely have to search it out on tap and see if its as good as I remember it being at the 3rd Year party.

Also RE: VMC, it's still a solid BA Milk Stout for $15, considering Hunter Variants run $12. But yeah, I'd still take SJ over VMC at the same price point.

good to know. i may pop in and try it on draft before i consider bottles. that's why i love rev releases. no need to buy a damn thing blind; let the beer speak for itself on draft at the release without having to risk missing out.

edit: i remember the very first VMC release; there was a huge line that was all gone through by 4pm and then everyone realized that there wasn't really any need to line up with the kind of quantities they were making. after that, never a line again.

There was a period of time right around 2012 where special tappings were absolute shitshows. I'm talking KBS in a small bar in Mokena running dry in 10 minutes. It has definitely tapered off.

I think it is due to:

  1. Too many 'special tappings'. Nobody believes they are special for very long if you have two of them per week.
  2. More bars starting to throw good **** on whenever with little to no announcement.

Now excuse me while I go drink Kentucky Mountain on draft at an empty bar.
