So, I just got an offer for the Transient Reserve.
For those of you who have it, do you find it worth it? Is the beer worth the price of admission and are the release parties all they are cracked up to be? Can you bring a plus one to the releases?

i reupped without a second thought. some of the beer is a bit young on release (both obeluses, pentameter), but the release events have been super fun and the exact opposite of shitshow, and much of the beer i've opened has been tasty.

Yes.

This.
On a weekend that was this Black Friday, the Transient release that Sunday was a well timed respite.

Well dontdrinkbeer Alerted the masses about Wild V so expect a 5 alarm shitshow on Saturday at Penrose especially since there's only 300 bottles. Allocations won't be decided until Saturday morning.

Keep in mind they have many well versed beer nerds on staff including themselves. They can smell mules. It's the holiday season. Give your mules the weekend off.

I think it's worth it. For such a small, young brewery Chris is putting out some tasty stuff. They have potential. The releases are low key and fun. Yes you can bring a +1. 95% of the members seem to be knowledgable beer people. Plus IMO the membership price is one of the better deals in craft beer. It works out to be something like $17 a bottle.

I've been really happy with the purchase so far and definitely reupped. If you've been paying attention to any of the stuff he's posted on facebook, I think we should be excited about this round.

My one Transient complaint is the lack of variety. I'd greatly prefer different beers rather than multiple treatments of the same beer. Two different treatments of an oud bruin and 3 treatments of the Flanders red isn't exactly the most exciting thing to me. BUT everything has been from very solid (if young, as tinypyramids pointed out) to outstanding (Red Wine Betise blew me away). I happily re-upped with the belief that he's shown a great start that might turn to something really special.

Not to speak for Chris but....variety and different stuff is coming, he is/was a pinched handcuffed brewing out of one trick (while still brewing for them). New barrels and puncheons and all sort of good **** are on the horizon along with new brews and new places to brew. Sign up for #2 because by the time #3 rolls around you'll be golden pony boy.

I will agree with you here. With him never announcing what bottles we are receiving beforehand, it's always a little let down getting a couple of the same beer just finished in different barrels. I think part of it is that Chris is trying to find his footing right now, seeing what works/what he likes best. Im not even really sure he has fully decided what his staples are yet.

I really wish I could have called off today if only to see Brett Porter fending off beer nerds with shield and spear trying to keep them from lining up before 4.

Their mules will blot out the sun.

I look at part of my Transient Reserve payment as buying stock in the future too. Are all those bottles worth roughly $17 per, I would say no. But if you knock $20-$30 off the top as a donation to help him grow the brewery and take off the rough costs of the merch, then you're at a pretty nice pricepoint for the style of beers being brewed. I re-upped essentially because of Betise. The release party also played a part given how cheap the draft pours are and the variety. Wayward and Henry I also think are top notch beers. I look at the multiple treatments as part of the growth process in the first period. I'd rather "gamble" on a young and new brewery in my local market at this point, then give money to these other societies. Plus I'm just done chasing beer, so it's nice to have some interesting local stuff secured.

bolded for a well-worded phrasing as to other reasons why i decided to reup despite the initial lack of variety in bottled base beers.

Especially this. Plus, aside from the promise that Transient has, I really, really like the idea of Transient creating a little more momentum for saison/wild-focused breweries in Chicago. It's great having plenty of new breweries around, but some style/focus variety would be fantastic. Given the farming focus in the Midwest, it's really disappointing that we haven't seen more breweries like this popping up here, even on a small scale. I wouldn't think that the lack of small nanos like are seen in New England and the Pacific Northwest are the result of difficult legal issues, as there are otherwise plenty of nanos, they're just focused on the same American styles as almost all the other breweries here.

While on the subject, I should at least give a shoutout to Penrose, as I really like what they're doing.

Good luck to maximthegreat and Lansman and whoever else decided to mod over at CCBE. Despite many enjoying the trolling or general idiocy, I officially lasted less than a month. It's a cesspool, and this morning I took my last swim. Back to regularly scheduled pictures of people's kids, political hottakes, and the thinly veiled racism that typically pollute my facebook timeline, ahh the joys of growing up in a small town.

So what time is everyone thinking of getting to Penrose on Saturday? It doesn't seem like there is much hype behind this (thankfully).

Honestly, I'm thinking between 10:30 and 10:45. BUT, I live like 20 minutes away so if that's too late, oh well.

Side note for anybody going, you can bring bring your own food to the taproom as they don't have any (outside of some freebies for the release). You could always just go to a local place though after a few beers. Bien Trucha, Altiro, Geneva Ale House, and Nobel House are very close and solid options. There are places locally that will deliver pizza there too.
