Villains Chicago
4 hrs ·
Hello Everyone, we would like to thank all of customers and supporters throughout the years. We have made the difficult decision to close Villains Chicago on Saturday Sept. 8th. Please come by for one last burger and beer or two. Cheers

I never made it out here myself, but I'm sure a number of you all have over the years.
I haven’t gone back since they re-opened. But they were my favorite burg pre-BA. And they were the first place I ticked Juliet back in the day. So many memories.

Friendly Illinois Brethren...some questions about natural wine:

1) Assume we have *something* available here?
2) Are these wines on shelves or do you need to know a guy?
3) Do we get any here that would be of interest to someone in another part of the country (say, CA)?

If the answers to the above are yes, shelves, yes - I would follow that up with an ask for recommendations on bottles and locations that have said bottles.

Thanks in advance for any natty wine tips!

Edit: hello LMGTFY:
(Link to media)

Will still take more direct/personal recs - thanks.

check vendors at third coast soif (the new fobab at plumbers hall) for a decent list of wineries and bars/restaurants that feature them. most american ones are from the left coast, so i'd assume they're avail out there. typically what i do is walk into red & white, say 'funky' and hand them 20 dollars.

Diversey and Red & White Wines on Milwaukee are your best bet for these kinds of wines, as they are only carrying wines that would "fit" this rather undefined category. There is some overlap between the two, but both places have curated selections that are pretty exclusive of each other, so both are worth a stop.

Even though you don't need to "know a guy" per se, I still highly recommend talking to someone in the shop. Everyone that works at both locations is incredibly friendly, and will help you navigate the selections they have. Getting to know your merchant is huge! It doesn't hurt that R&W has an attached wine bar with cool by the glass pours. Stop in on a Saturday or Sunday, grab a glass and peruse.

As California and New York are the major markets for these wines in the US, and are largely brought to the US by NYC or California based importers, there won't be exclusive bottles, but there very well can and will be things that actually make it to the shelf in this market as opposed to just getting passed along to friends in those markets. I am surprised often by some incredible bottles that just sit on the shelves here.

Given the number of wines available, specific recs would be tough depending on availability. Producers I love include:
Chateau de Beru (Chablis)
Frederic Cossard / Domaine de Chassorney (Burgundy)
Vouette et Sorbee (Champagne)
Stein (German Riesling)
Peter Lauer (German Riesling)
Envinate / Benje (Spain / Canary Islands)
Jean-Louis Dutraive (Beaujolais)

The list goes on and on, but those are some examples of producers making really clean, dialed in natural wines. Shoot me a PM if you have any other questions about producers/regions you've been curious about and I'd be happy to help.

- Colin

This is an awesome place to start - thanks!

Will PM if further questions arise.

Love the caption: The wine sold in the shop is primarily made in Spain, Italy and France.

Mostly because Coturri is from California, but what do I know having only been to Tony's home to purchase wine directly from him. I actually still have bottles of what is labeled "27" in the picture with no labels because he didn't have any made at the time.

I know as I do shop there sometimes. I was just referencing the poor use of a caption to image. Working as a designer for almost 2 decades, one should be more aware when choosing to marry the two together. It's like using a caption about LeBron underneath a picture of MJ, I am just saying be better people...

Fair, I should’ve looked at the article.

I'm sure a fair amount of us on here read Josh's stories regardless, but the predictable Twitter replies are entertaining.

I sent him a comment on facebook & he hasn't responded to it but the ACLU aint exactly the lawyering arm of democratic socialists. and for breweries with hearts & causes on the sleeve, middle brow nearly a mention. o well...the weird thing is, when you really think about it, how are true charities that help any people left/right wing? like is wounded warrior right wing? are womens health centers left wing? is the greater food depository centrist? weird how we enjoy grouping things into easy digestibles.

and with the exception of the pinko commies you know about in the city, from my chats, i've found a whole lotta this industry to lean right.

Yeah, it kinda sucks that MB didn't get a shout out. Silver lining, though: maybe JB will show up to your opening party?

Chicago-area breweries Alarmist, Burnt City, Hopewell, Metal Monkey, Middle Brow, Sketchbook and Werk Force have all brewed beers named People Power that will be available through Election Day, Nov. 6. Ten percent of sales go to the People Power campaign.

Five of the breweries — Hopewell, Middle Brow, Sketchbook, Werk Force and Metal Monkey — will tap their People Power beers 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Links Taproom in Wicker Park (1559 N. Milwaukee Ave.).

They got a shout out, but I'm with Nick in that I don't view the ACLU as a "liberal" organization considering they support a bunch of causes liberals might be opposed to philosophically.

Don't want to give our little haven of discussion the Toxic Tag so I'll leave it at that.

So i tasted BCBS Vanilla out of the tank today while at Fulton tasting something we made together. It tastes the same, or possibly better, than 2010 OG. I was absolutely astonished, and i might put Matilda back on at Publican in those hideous bottles just to make sure i get considered for an allocation this year.

owner at a local place used to hang wacky pro-right/anti-left cartoons & signs on the wall adjacent to his register... harmless stuff, mostly. he was a decent guy to chat with anyways.

one day i walked in and there was a 8 1/2 x 11 sign of Michael Brown's face with a target over it and some terrible, awful line about "next time we're shooting for the head" or some nonsense

that was the last i stepped in there.

business doesn't seem to have suffered since then. he built a shiny new building from ground up and it seems very popular.

Racist bar owner aside, the problem is that modern journalism is designed for clickbait and widening the political divide. Only the owner of Pollyanna gets the benefit of being a human being with diverse opinions on various subjects for claiming to be primarily conservative.

I would gather that had rhe writer done any actual research for his piece instead of going for maxxx clickkssss he would have found varying degrees of liberalism and conservatism amongst the whole crowd. I am so tired of lazy writing and baseless pigeonholing. We need to stop rewarding this ****.

Bill O'Reilly's fault. For 15 years he would constantly rip them as leftist loons.
