Damn, this thread has devolved into bitching, moaning and one upping with creative insults.

It just seems a little hypocritical of us to criticize people going through extreme methods of obtaining beer while at the same time most of us are planning our black Friday BCBS camp out.
Want to truck chase? I say go for it.
Wants to trade a $120 beer? Fine, that's nothing new, just look at our FT forum.
People want to go crazy over root beer? Let them, we clearly don't like the stuff anyways.

I don't see a problem with people getting beer that I cant when they go through the effort I am not willing to put in. There are plenty of other equally good beers on the shelf
And in many of the cases where things are selling out in under an hour, I would wager that its more due to the store only getting a single case of something rather than hoards of people looting the place.

In the case of someone selling beer that they got for free, that guy is a prick, but its not among our community so lets not start a witch hunt.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.
Its just beer.

I camp out at Darkness Day.

I'm going to keep bitching because a majority of these turds are the reason I've almost completely withdrawn from anything involving the Chicago scene. I believe that it's possible to be an enthusiast without being fanatical. At this point, every ******* release seems like Black Friday with people clamoring and scrambling over each other to grab all they can and damn whoever else might want some "you didn't want it bad enough".

All ******** IMO.

Some people camp out at Darkness day (me included) and some people chase trucks for Abraxas. We shouldn't pick and choose which releases its OK for people to go ape **** over.

I agree with you about being and enthusiast without become fanatical, but the last 5 or so pages would suggest that most of us have not reached that point. We have been getting so worked up about recent releases. If you have the power to do something (as in go chase down some beer) but choose not to, then that loss is on you and not the people who put in the effort.

It sucks that certain things are getting harder to get, but this influx in demand has also made certain things much, much easier to get.

*Side note:
(because I honestly think these types of things should be discussed)
Could we start a separate thread about this or something? I just kind of feel like this is not the thread to do it in.

Camping out for Darkness Day and chasing trucks for shelf beers are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum. Darkness Day is an event that's held once a year. Camping out is part of the event. It's tradition. Do people still get butthurt because they do zero research about the event and try and come at 8 AM the day of only to not be guaranteed beer? Yep. But there's a big difference between that and people chasing trucks, picking up all shelf releases and who then go and immediately sell them at a mark up or try and trade them away for whales. We're not that frustrated about the act of obtaining the beer, although it does suck that I can't get any shelf release ever because they sell out in a second. We're merely frustrated over the end result of what these **** sippers do with all the shelf releases they pick up. People aren't buying beer to drink anymore. They're buying beer to attempt to trade up or sell for profit because people who actually want to drink the beer are desperate for it.

And it is just beer and that is the reason why we're frustrated. It's sad that it's turned into a stock exchange. Beers change hands so fast as people attempt to trade up and trade around, I bet some stupid ******* has traded for the exact same bottle of beer he traded away 8 months earlier.

Lol, this probably happens all the time.

It's ridiculous when I can't find a shelf beer to drink, and then go online to see multiple ******** trying to flip it.

And it's fascinating as to which ones are deemed desirable. Why is Sapping Mammoth flying off the shelf, yet other Half Acre & Maine beers just sit? I swear to god, the artwork has a lot to do with it. OOHH LOOK FANCY NEW SHINY OOHHH OOOOOHHHH. Add in the fact that it's somewhat limited at the moment... Boom, profit.

It doesn't matter that Half Acre will be brewing their own version here and eventually selling it. By then, the shitbirds will have moved onto their next abomination.

It's all about that quick hit. In and out. Like day trading, or ticket scalping. And it's getting really ******* old.

On my drive into work this morning, I had a long but tempered rant about the stuff that's going on formulated in my head. Ready to pull the trigger on it when I see... this:

I'd parse everything wrong with this but I really don't have the effort in me. **** all this. Someone is gonna die on Black Friday.

This is what really rustle's me up. The instant selling of these releases. They buy them and probably posts the CL ad right from their phone in the parking lot.
That and actively FT: fresh PW, 18th St, etc IPA, DIPAs, and pale ales.....IP Chicago.
What happened to just buying what you'll drink and leaving the rest on the shelf/at the brewery for someone else?

Dear god people are such obnoxious ********. Gotta try to flip any beer with the word "Barrel Aged" on it! That beer isn't even ******* good!

I'm not one to scream about "community" or "advocacy." Those terms and concepts come with plenty of ****** baggage. But in the last year, there appeared a significant number of people- like this CL idiot- who were told that "rare beers are worth money!" and started truck chasing. It reminds me a little too much of the comics boom of the early 90's, where people expected to retire on their 10 copies of Superman #75 and the fancy gatefold copy of X-Men #1. If you're going to enter into a hobby for the collector's aspect of it, at least know what the **** you're buying. All these people are doing is spending money that they'll unlikely get back- nevermind the ******* time they spent on getting it. And ******* people like me over from getting a bottle of something as simple as FW18 in the process.

About 6 months ago I was at my local Binny's (Elmwood Park) where I overheard a conversation between an employee and customer where they were talking about Prop. The customer said something along the lines of, "I really like coconut so I want to try it." The Binny's employee actually responded, "Save it and sell it man. I got a bottle I got put aside because I work here and I can easily get $100 for it on Craigslist." Somehow it's gotten WORSE than that at this point.

I stop at Binny's yesterday to get some Blue Gene. 1 bottle, for myself, to you know...drink. I get my one bottle off the shelf and a dude pulls up behind me with a cart and takes three bottles and then asks the manager what else he has for trading.

I'm not really opposed to trading, but that **** is not sustainable.

This is worse than the guy getting free beer and trying to sell it for cost IMO. You work at a place and get the rarest of rare beer by doing nothing, and all you can think about is selling it for a crazy profit?!

I have a feeling this right here is adding to the craziness. Liquor store workers that don't know anything just know that there are people banging down the door to get said beer. Then search CL and see some idiot wanting $150 for a Prop and then everyone at that liquor store is like, "Did you know this bottle is worth $150?!!" Then they tell their friends and soon everyone who knows nothing, thinks that a Prop is worth $150. And they all try to work their friends at the same store to get them a bottle, just so they can sell it for profit.

All these people are doing is spending money that they'll unlikely get back- nevermind the ******* time they spent on getting it.
We would hope this is the case, but that's the thing. People are willing to buy this **** marked up $10 or more. I would bet that ****** $30 pack of root beer gets sold.

Personally I'm at the place where I will pass on anything that more than a buck or two higher than MSRP at any liquor store. Even on stuff I really really wanted to try. Just not worth it to me. Will others ever get there too? I think it all comes down to how you value the beer in your cellar. I look at $4$ cost, not CL cost.

When I first started out I thought of my beer in terms of CL prices. I'm hoping it's a normal phase people get past... doubtful.

Oh I'm with you on that. Even with beers I really want to try, I'll just chalk it up to a loss if I can't buy it from my regular spots that keep prices low. I know of stores that'll have said beer, but it'll be $3-5 over retail.

What was MSRP on that? $15 after taxes?

Let's say someone does pay $30 for it. That's a $15 profit, which is good! Except to make that money, you likely had to: stand in line and/or truck chase to get it, then schedule time to meet someone somewhere to exchange cash for product. You spent 1-3 hours (**** traffic, amirite!?) to make FIFTEEN ******* DOLLARS. You're better off working a minimum wage job to actually make that much money.

I'll grant you that things like Prop are "better" investments. I understand there will likely always be a gray market for things like that. It's the root beer and FW18 and Blue Gene **** that bothers me with this: they're buying shelf beers in mass quantities thinking they'll make money on them, leaving people who actually want the beer to be left out.

If I can't get it with a few phone calls about when/if it's coming in, I'm probably not going to bother.

I honestly have no sympathy for beer vultures, investment beer bankers, etc. and the people who enable/excuse them. Anything that makes them rethink their behavior is a win in my mind. **** em.

I'll call a couple of local places a week or two out from release just to say "hey is this coming in and if so, when?" just to get a sense of when to start coming by the stores to look around. Even with that I feel like a bother at times - especially on a release lwhere the phone is probably ringing constantly.

Need a new attitude, I guess. **** *******, get beer. Everyone else but me can eat a dick.

Superman #75

Loved that...

I was way into comics too at that time and felt the bubble bursting. Sold my 7 boxes of comics and bought a car. lol.

This beer craze if different though for a lot of the reasons you guys mentioned, but the another problem is people's misconceptions about cellaring. Cellaring works for what, maybe 5% of the beers out there? I drink almost everything fresh including BA stouts because I've found very little of these things get better.

People out there with 6mo old Mars and 2007 Broo Doo. WTF. Oh, if I hang onto it maybe it will go up in value!

Jesus Christ.

I feel like Dan Hampton talking about the Bears.

"If this isn't bottom, what is?"

Speaking of overbuying and/or hoarding. For those here who don't venture into the Operation: Find the Shittiest Deal on MyBeerCellar.com thread, check out some of the quantities of beer in this guy's cellar: http://www.cellarhq.com/cellars/HWJ

Why would anyone keep a bottle of Broo Doo from 2007?!?!

Ahahaha What the ****?? That dude has 83 bottles of 2005 Decadence from Weyerbacher??

Who the hell even trades for beer from Revolution anyways?
