Will infected beer ferment or will it not even ferment? My beer has been bubbling away for 2-3 days and since it is my first beer I am not sure if the smell I am smelling is correct or infected? I really can't describe the smell? I will be honest I just started to read about how important sanitizing is and did not really give it much thought. Will do better as I procide hopefully to bottling..

What you are most likely smelling is fermentation. Sometimes it can smell interesting to say the least. I brew a lot of Belgians and at higher temps get fairly fruity and spicy smell to them. Sometimes you will have sulphur and CO2 smell mixed with some of the other organic matter off gassing. Don't worry it will change over time and in over a week or 2 it will actually smell like beer. Also with infectons if you look at the wort, you will see the tell tale long white string pellicles and or white bubbles at the top. Most people who think they have an infection do not actually have an infection. They are rare if you use any form of sanitation.

Hey beefloaf I see you are from Lancaster, I live in Ephrata. Just starting to get into this brewing thing. I figured I might as well give it a try as I love trying different brews and heck why not brew them my self.. I have to admit I have the newbee worries. Kind of would suck spending $30-$40 on beer kit and not gettng anything out of it. I like wheat beer as well and that is what I am brewing...
