Fermentation, Problem or RHAHB ? Help! LOL

Brewed yesterday at 3:00 PM. Pitched yeast "no starter". This morning the yeastiness are doing there thing. This afternoon i check on it. The yeast foam seems to be climbing up the neck towards the air lock. I have a blow off tube and sanitized water ready. Should i put the blow off tube in or leave it alone ?

I just had the same thing happen so I had to make do with what I got and this is what I done.

I always use a blow off tube for the first 3-5 days of fermentation. I usually only switch to an airlock after the yeast-party in the fermenter has almost stopped. Just my personal opinion, but I say go ahead and put on a blowoff tube so you do not have to worry. The previous poster posted a quick, cheap solution, but I would probably cut the airlock below the first set of "bubbles" and attach the tube there. You will sacrifice one airlock that way, but it will flow more air, which is the entire point of a blowoff, anyway.

Just called my LHBS i got my kit from. They included a blow off tube. Sanitized everything including the bottle and water. Disaster averted ! thanks guys !

If you're concerned enough about what you're seeing to ask the question, then put the blow off tube on and relax. It won't hurt anything to put a blowoff tube on for a day or two and you won't be worried at 3 a.m. that your airlock is blown out and there's krausen all over your closet or wherever!

She sure is chugging ! Wasn't expecting such a strong fermentation . OG 1.050 and used a Wyest northern ale. I burst the pack about 4 hours before pitching it. It swelled up nice. Since i didn't use a starter i figured it would be a slow go.

This was a last min thing as my LHBS is closed. I'll definitely get a better system set up for my next brew
