Hello all.

I brewed an imperial stout on Saturday and pitched the yeast. Overnight, the top blew off of the carboy and foam and beer went everywhere. Since then, I haven't seen much fermentation action in the carboy. My question is, do I pitch more yeast into the carboy to replace the yeast lost due to the blow off, or will this mess up the fermentation? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!

Shouldn't need to add any more yeast. After krausen there aren't many visual indications that fermentation is continuing, but it should be finishing up.

While there is yeast in the foam that blew off, there is also plenty of yeast in suspension in the fermenting beer.

There are plenty of yeast cells left. If not they will reproduce anyway.

What is the fermentation temperature? Warmer will be faster and more violent, but also could lead to off flavors. Mid sixties is best for the fermentation temperature of the wort for most ale yeasts. Check the range for each yeast you use. Shoot for the middle of the range.

The top blew off because the Krausen plugged the airlock. Next time set up a blow off tube.
