Hey all,

I am looking into getting a chest freezer and converting it into a fermentation chamber. My question is when using a temp controller such as an STC-1000 if I have it set up with an outlet for hot and one for cold do I just plug the freezer plug into the cold slot? That way it turns the freezer on and off as needed or do I need to wire it differently? Also what are y'all using as your heat source? I live in the NE and it gets pretty cold here during the winter time. My garage typically gets to about 35-45 degrees.

yup, that is all you do. you will need to wire outlets or direct wire the freezer to the mains. Also keep in mind that the STC-1000 only supports up to 10A on the outputs directly. ( 1200 watts, is usually more than enough)

I see alot of people go with a 100 watt light bulb in a paint can. I imagine you could use those wrap around ferm heaters too.

I just picked up a 5cuft chest freezer off CL for $50 and am planning to do the same thing. I live in the back hills of WV and it gets pretty cold during winter here as well. I was thinking about one of those small ceremic office heaters people put under their desks. Wonder if that would work?

Haven't decided on a temp controller yet. What brought you around to the SCT-1000?

I was going a lot of reading on here and saw the STC1000 was a very popular temp controller on her. Also it's only about $19 on eBay. Can't go wrong with that.

I checked Amazon, comparable prices, with some decent reviews from fellow homebrewers. I'm sold.

I don't plan on attemping anything until I return from vacation mid-Sep. Keep the thread updated with your progress if you would please.

Will do. I'm working on clearing room for a chest freezer now. Also driving home as I type( at a red light) going to be brewing a pumpkin beer tomorrow. My supplies are riding shotgun.
