So I want to fashion a fermentation chamber with either a upright or chest freezer. I've seen the pictures and read these forums about the basic elements (temperature controller, heating elements, etc). However, I'm quite DIY illiterate. I was going to just spend the extra money for a temp controller instead of trying to wire a controller myself.

My question is how to construct these chambers with without drilling a bunch of holes into the freezers or extending the doors out. Where/How do you run cords?

yep, and plug the fridge/freezer's power cord into the temp controller then plug the temp controller cord into an outlet. What holes?

If using a pre-wired temp controller and just a chest freezer, just stick the temp probe inside and shut the lid on top of it.

If I need a heating element too can I still just shut the door on the wires?

Yep - I'm using a reptile heater taped to the side of my fermenter. Power cord is running out the top of the freezer and the lid is closed on in.
